    Upper coil obviously not firing even with proper input from CDI. Replace coil. Aftermarket may have been a coil for a points motor, and is not compatible, even if it “ohms out” as good.

    No water from Tell Tail.

    Pull telltale hose off block, probe port w/wire and re-try. oh.. if you’re testing on muffs, try it in barrel deep enough to submerge impeller or lake test. Muffs can show strange issues, and are not a valid waterpump/cooling system test anyway.. good luck!

    Vintage 9.5: Can you set points with a timing light?

    Timing fixture and continuity tester will get you spot-on. .020 at widest gap will be very close to right-on. Make sure armature plate has no lateral play as it makes for erratic point opening timing.. good luck!

    Adding charging system to 1997 evinrude 25 hp

    I did this on a buddy’s 15hp 1984. Timsoutboard.com had used electric start stator plate w/battery charging coil, wiring block and rectifier for under $100. Smaller wires are fine to hook to battery, as not a large amp load. Negative to engine block and + to red wire from rectifier. Good luck!

    From videos, you are losing power to one cylinder. Check spark.. may be a fouled plug, or bad cd box. cylinder drop test will confirm.

    Tips for putting lower unit back on?

    I always spread that coupler open a bit with a screwdriver before re-mounting gearcase. Upper shift rod should slide right in (move shifter handle toward forward), use a flashlight to align shift rod detent to coupler bolt hole and insert/tighten coupler bolt.. good luck!

    What causes this?

    Looks to be loose steering bracket mounting bolts by the side-to-side play. Also could be upper mounts as stated ^. Either way, powerhead removal to remedy..

    Wire spring under plastic pinion gear must be in the skinny groove on bottom side of pinion gear to get the tension when pulling to force pinion up to flywheel..
