If the cap is welded as one piece, then glueing it down and keep the ends under the end caps should be enough. Remember that you will have a engine mounted over it. That is all I did for mine and still holding strong.

Did you use a hardener? If you can create a dent with a fingernail then it hasn't fully cured. My experience, paint always takes twice as long to cure as the manufacture says it will...

I work on my 1974 Evinrude and enjoy it. Toyed with a new 4 stroke, but cost makes me question why when I have a working motor I can fix. Like new cars these days, you need a computer with OEM software to fix anything....

If you do use it in saltwater, carpeted bunks holding the saltwater next to the hull isn't good. So something to keep in mind if you do ever dunk it.
