1981 Johnson 90 HP overheating, but not all the time

They serve 2 purposes. First is they force water around the cylinder walls to allow for even cooling of the cylinder walls (IE 1/2 of the cylinder wall doesn't cool twice as fast as the other 1/2 of the cylinder wall). They also act as a restrictor to slow down the flow of water through the...

MerCruiser shift cable install aid ideas.

I don't do these anymore, but when I did, it was powertune to help seal the boot to the gimbal housing, and wire pulling lube on the inside of bellow and end of the shift cable to get it through.

    Type of boat

The type of boat would be a center console. The manufacturer and model number/name on the boat would be next to impossible to determine unless you found somebody else with that exact same boat. Is there a specific reason why you are asking? Is it a value thing or something else?

1982 Starcraft Questar 191 (Volvo Penta AQ140) - Battery voltage drops to 8V when starting, cables get hot

I took the boat to a marine repair shop for diagnosis. They went through the electrical system and found that some of the cables become extremely hot after the engine has been running. They disconnected the alternator and the gauge/instrument wiring during testing but were unable to isolate the...

    Battery not charging.......

You really need a DVA to check the voltage out of the stator if you are going to DIY this.

Engine wouldn't fire without throttle after overnight

I've never seen a regulator go bad intermittently; they either work or they don't, they either leak or they don't. For the sake of argument, lets say your regulator is failing intermittently. If you leave the hose disconnected, every time the regulator is working correctly and not failing, the...

Engine wouldn't fire without throttle after overnight

So basically that's how fuel pressure regulators work. High vacuum on the regulator equals lower fuel pressure. Low vacuum (or in this case no vacuum) fuel pressure rises. What you need are numbers.

How to kill mold on billge/engine surfaces

I'd be careful with the chemicals on an older aluminum tank. Personally I would use a cheap electric pressure washer and just water to knock everything off, then let everything dry out in the hot sun. Mold needs cold and damp to grow, and UV light kills it pretty quickly, which fortunately...

    Electronic steering

Electric steering works great until it doesn't. Pros for electric steering. 1. It works great. 2. Little to no steering system maintenance. 3. Some of the systems are adjustable in terms of sensitivity and how many total turns of the wheel to turns of the outboard. You can have the boat turn...

    Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI

The appearance of an engine running rich can be caused by low engine compression. Before throwing money at this, check the compression.

    Boat purchase during Northern winter

No worries, and I apologize if my language was salty. You have nothing to gain with this deal and everything to lose. I would move one. With a few exceptions, on the whole, the boating market has been down and it's a buyers market. Wait until spring, find 3 or 4 boats that you like and are...

    Boat purchase during Northern winter

Surveyor here..... There is more that can go wrong than can go right during a limited trial run. What if the boat leaks? Is 10% of the purchase price enough to correct deficiencies? If the boat blows an engine during the limited trial run, then what? (it happens) Buying a boat is about one...

1998 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer... rain intrusion driving me nuts

Is your boat taking on water afloat, with the boat on the hard, or both?

1998 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer... rain intrusion driving me nuts

For all intents and purposes, boats 20 feet and longer are supposed to. And you are correct, these are a common leak point.
