One step forward...4 steps back:grumpy:. The fun continues. The boys and I have been having fun doing rivets this morning. It's great to have 3 people doing it...1 blocker, 1 riveting, 1 sizing & putting on the 5200. Sure makes it easier!

Oof...those 4 rivets are rough. It looks like pops used a 2 part bottom paint at some point. It sounds like you gents worked out quite a system for knockin' them out...and back-in :lol: !

Man fun times, Admiral and I did the entire boat. Don't envy anyone doing rivets but sounds like you got a good system and crew to help. The hardest ones were the 4 that needed to be bucked in line with the bottom hull supports. Ultimately, we just removed them since we were going to redo them anyways.

I need to replace the supports and face of the bow cover area. Had anyone done it with Aluminum instead of wood? Any pro's/con's?

I used 3/4" ply for my bow deck to create a flat surface for the 80# thrust 90 Lb TM.

I used extra boards from my Transom build and sanded it down to give me a solid surface. Post #438 in below thread. I wanted some "meat" to be able to build off of. Since I knew I was going to make a front anchor point, I wanted to make sure I had something that could support the force.

SHSU is yours flat or convex? Mine looks convex. What kind of anchor point did you put? and what for? Thx!

Convex, hence my comment on sanding. It wasn't perfect by any means and had some parts bow out at first, but as things were installed it came into final shape.

As for hardware, I used an 8 inch Gemlux pull up cleat with bow chocks.

The boat is used in the Galveston Bay (Gulf of Mexico) mostly for fishing. As it is a smaller boat, wanted to make sure that I had the bow to the waves and not sideways when I am at the jetty. We have Oil Tankers and such rolling through all the time.

Well I have 1 hold up. The knucklehead that put in the aluminum pop rivets with steel shafts drilled out several of the hols to larg for a 1/4" rivet...So I'm having to go up to a 3/8" rivet. SO now I'm waiting on them, but I can still keep moving forward with other tasks.

I did get my pneumatic rivet gun in today so that will save me a lot of work when I start doing the rivets on the gunwales. I have a lot of those to replace.

Yeah not on the seams but Starcraft is the knucklehead with the steel mandrel and AL body blinds, all of them except for the LF blinds in the decking were that way on my Chief. A real PITA to drill out until the mandrel rusts out that is.

The bow deck on my V5 SS is flat for TM mounting.

3/8!?!?!?! Man that is a big rivet. As for the pneumatic rivet gun, those things are awesome. I followed Watermann's example when I redid my gunwales and put rivets ever 2 inches. The pneumatic gun saved my hands lol

Yeah I was thinking he meant 3/16" was bored out and went to 1/4"? 3/8" AL rivet Thinking if that big I'd just pop in an SS machine screw and nyloc.

So I ordered those rivets and they are large! I actually just ordered 5/16 rivets because that's closest to he size of most of the holes. I don't want to take off any more AL than i need to. They should be here in a couple days. We're back at it this week. I have both boys able to work with me for a couple days. Looking forward to the time with them and the progress!

Those V5 end caps are specific to the V5, no idea where on earth you'd come by the exact ones as a replacement.

I had to have my end caps custom made. As Watermann indicated parts like that are almost as rare as a Dinosaur...

Also, have to agree that the pop rivet gun is a huge help. We did our solids first, so going to it was like a dream.

What a great read so far mojo and a fun looking project. I’m about to start my project too and was wondering where you have been buying the rivets from? Also I noticed on mine that one of those transom caps was missing on one side and the repair the previous owner did on it looks pretty good, I can get some pictures of it if you’d like if it’ll help you figure out what to do with the area
