Im buying a alumacraft alpex bali for $200. Its a white body with a blue top( I know no correct boat terms yet, feel free to help me learn) I was suppose to stop tonight and get pictures and do a final inspection before handing over payment. Mother nature decided to rain since noon instead. Ive spent the last 2hrs going through the parts and accessories pages.

now for boat info. Its been sitting for 2yrs according to the owner. Motor runs but boat only operates in reverse for some reason? It also has a 60hp Evinrude outboard. Its a project boat, the whole interior needs replaced by my judgement. Seats are shot, floor looks weak, panels are sagging.

Is there a way to inspect the transom without cutting holes into it for wood rot? its my biggest fear with this boat otherwise it appears solid.

I will be getting pictures tomorrow or wed for sure if the weather cooperates with me. A huge thank you to anyone who can supply info or .02 cents as this is my first boat and project. Always wanted one and this one peaked my interest.

Hello and welcome to the iboats.com dry dock, Asmodaues...
Here is my first couple of cents worth...
Depending on the age of the boat and the way you are describing it, you should automatically assume that it will need a full and complete restoration, to include transom, stringers and deck...
That way when you actually own it you won't be surprised or put off by the daunting task ahead...
If you happen to win the proverbial 'lottery', and find that the deck is the only bad in it, then you will be way ahead...
However, in most cases, rot begins way down low in the bowels of the boat where the only sure way to know is through some destructive exploratory searching...
Best of luck and we'll be looking forward to the pics...

Heres the pictures as promised, a few of the exterior to start. Please excuse the mess as it hasn't been cleaned out yet and is still on their property till I have a chance to move it to my house.

Engine, Model #60752 A, googled it to a 1967 Model.

I didn't know it was a V4 until I removed the cover.

Now for the pictures of areas im concerned with. I understand its an older boat and some may be normal wear and tear. Id rather ask and be safe than not and find out the hard way.

This is right on the ridge under the boat. Keel I think it is?

This is the transom left and right corners.

Inside the rear compartment/transom area

Engine, not sure what repair was attempted here

Thats fine. Alot wont get done till this fall due to me working in the agriculture field and wheat harvest is around the corner. The next pics will be cleanup and some light work. Research and ordering new parts to have ready.

Great looking old boat!
Definitely be prepared to plan for a full restore on it...
Hard to tell for sure from just the pics, but all indications are the transom will need replacing along with any of the substructure underneath that is rotten and the deck...
You should consider separating the cap from the hull for full and complete access to the entire structure.
The damage to the keel seems to have been caused by the worn out keel roller.
Not a huge deal compared the the rest of the work that lies ahead...
The picture of the questionable repair may have been the previous owners attempt at making what looks like a choke solenoid for the carburetors, work...?
Best of luck and looking forward to any progress.

Ive tracked down the manual for the outboard allready. Its being ordered tommorrow. Im going to contact alumacraft to see if they have any information on the boat to find correct year. Ya, i was going to see if I could replace the transom from inside the boat. I plan to strip it to a bare hull and redo it all. I want to keep it for many years and will try as hard as possible to do things right I didnt know i could seperate the cap from the hull. How hard is it to do? Can the keel be filled in and smoothed back out? I plan to go through the trailer also and install all new parts that contact/interact with the boat.

That looks terrific. Its being delivered to my house today as some jerkwad decided they needed my ball hitch more than me and stole it out of my receiver..... First project is to clean and wash it to see what i have. Then buy power toola as i dont have many. Lots of hand tooks from being a mechanic though.

As far as to split ot not, mostly what I have seen, guys with outboards, generally split for transom and stringer replacement (much more room to work) Splitting it self is very easy after engine is removed and all things are disconnected, .....remove the rub strip/rail and gently work the split line all the way around and walla, the cap comes right off....

I would highly recommend reading this link for a detailed briefing on how to replace transoms and stringers....

Very similar to my boat. Your's has a bit more wear and tear on her. Your transom, by all appearances does need to be replaced and in order to do that you will need to remove the top cap. That's pretty easy on these old boats. You will also need to remove the floor/deck and then inspect the stringers which more than likely will be bad as well. That 67' 60 Hp should move that boat really well. I have a 62' 40 hp evinrude and they are good ole' motors as long as the compression is good. Do a compression check on her as soon as you can. I'll be taggin along and be happy to help when and where I can. Take your time and ask plenty of questions and keep posting pics. Plenty of help here on the forum.:joyous:

Im glad I choose this forum to get help from. You've all been very welcoming and knowledgeable.

I plan to do some exploratory cuts in the transom from the inside and spots in the floor. Thank goodness for oscillating tools for precision cutting.

I had to give into to her request to get it on the water for Labor Day weekend to have some fun before I gut and redo it this winter. Its a good way to find any leaks at least. Made her agree we wont get to far from shore till we know if the outboards sound. Means I have to redo all the wiring first....

She's really excited to have it at our house. I told her she had a goofy smile on when I took the picture though. Im going to have to battle to change anything from the original colors it seems as I got lectured when I said I wanted to put new seats in. I got her to agree to the same color scheme but more comfortable design.

The motor seems solid when I turn the flywheel. Seems to feel like good compression. I want to do a tub setup to try and start it and see if the outdrive is a adjustment problem or if there are other issues.

Heres a picture of it attached to my Beast. It wont even notice its back there. 5.9L Magnum with 3.92 gears :)

Time for an update.

Ive been doing some small work to the boat lately. Sadly ive been to more doctor appointments than time spent working on my baby. Seems I have a bulging disc in my lumbar region and it pains be to do any kind of labored work. Been on steroids and hydrocodones from doc.

Ive torn my outdrive apart though in a attempt to find out why it will not work in forwards. the gears are intact, so I chalked it up to bent shift linkage. Hunted down the part numbers and ordered a new to me(used) one off ebay. New seal kit is ordered as well and should arrive tomm or sat

this has become my lifesaver, so glad I ordered it

this is the linkage I received today, the ebay piece is the one with the red tag. a few inches longer, yet my outboard shows the 5" extension

my outboard before disassembly, does it not look like it has the extension kit? driveshaft measured 30 3/4 inches

Mkboy, Asmidus hasnt been on iboats since February, long after his last post here. Didnt update this topic 3yrs later when he was here, hasnt been here in near 7mo, so he's not likely to get or reply to your request for an update

Please observe the 90day inactive topic guideline. After 90days w no new posts, best to treat old inactive topics like library books, for research only and not to be written to

Get some info and pix about your FILs Alpex and start a topic about it. Its unlikely theres anything so specific to an Alpex that ithers cant help youget it water ready.
