Re: Would you rent your boat for a weekend?

I see a lot of ads on Craigslist from people that want to "rent" a boat for a weekend. I can not imagine a boat owner doing this but I guess it must happen because I still see the ads.

Would you even consider renting your boat to a stranger?

Well, I said yes to $500 per day, plus full insurance for replacement. I suppose I would have to do some preliminary checks first to determine experience. A friend, sure. I have to trust my friends, provided they meet the criteria. Anyway, $500 in my pocket, plus the cost of a full replacement boat........well. .....I'll buy a nice new Regal. Either way, it could be money in pocket.

And so how do you know they have the money to replace the boat? If the boat fails and they have an accident as a result, will they sue you? Does your insurance cover renters?

They could do more than 500 dollars damage that would be invisible in five minute use until it fails on you the next weekend, try getting them, to pay for that. Some people will go to any expense to save a dollar or make a buck. Good luck.

My boat goes 60-65 and you know they would try and I would have to hear about them on the news. If they signed a waiver carried full insurance for double value and $500 a day I would do it.

I will not even allow my wife or grown kids take it out unless I am aboard.
My 30 year old daughter and her husband asked to borrow my boat once.
My response has kept her and all the rest of the kids from ever bringing up the subject again.

Wow you didn't raise children that you can trust?

slasmith its not that I don't trust my kids....There are 3 things I don't loan out:

1 my wife
2 my tools
3 my boat

my boat is my life and if the kids were to take it out and hit bottom and take out the lower end or bend the output shaft, who do you think is going to pay for it?

I've always told my friends that I would let them borrow my wife before letting them borrow my boat!

why does this question warrant 4 pages of No's?

Next Poll: would you launch your boat without the plug in?

Re: Would you rent your boat for a weekend?

Would it change anyone's mind if a licensed captain was in charge of the boat and the renters went along for the ride? And a special insurance policy was put in place for the time of the rental?

Re: Would you rent your boat for a weekend?

I haven't seen the most obvious reason not to. Liability. If you "rent" your boat, are you now responsible for properly training the operator as to the operation of the boat? That all safety gear is present and able to be used by the occupants? What if the boat has issues, whether normal or operator-caused. What if he is stopped by The Man and the boat is impounded? What if renter hits another boat and you are sued by him, the occupants, the person who got hit? What if someone DIES while he has the boat? Even if he tows it with an improperly equipped vehicle and gets in a wreck, where are you? I'd be less worried about losing the boat than losing everything i have because someone sues me.

So, to echo everyone else here, Hell No.
