I have been kicking around the idea of a waste oil stove for my shop. I found some plans online for converting a hot water heater. Waste oil is a pain to get rid of legally so it makes sense to get rid of it while getting some use out of it.

I was giving it to a guy with a commercial waste oil furnace but lost that option when we moved.

Our trash transfer station has a waste oil tank, yours may have one as well.

Most auto parts stores will take it if you buy the oil from them and return it to them in the original containers.

my boat oil i take to where i get my oil changed. When we had the big boat, the marina let everyone use their tank.


Back to my project, stove got delivered today. Will be very cosy in there when I get installed.

I put mine ( and anyone else's who I change their oil ) into a 44 gallon steel drum ...I have nearly filled 2 . I strain it thru a sieve because the intention was always to burn it . Couple of years ago I gave a whole drum to a niebough ....who , to my mind waisted it ( if you can waist waist oil ) ....he just tipped it into the ash try of is log burner and let her rip . quite spectacular ,the whole burner glowed twinkling red hot ,the flue actually started collapsing under its own weight ( later attached to the roof ) and there was 2 feet of flame coming out the top ....after the cap burnt/melted off ....I could see it from my house , but 44 gallons ( proper big gallons ....not them piddly wee US jobs ) lasted him a bit over a week........so he aint gettin any more

the shed was essentially torn down to the 2x's and rebuilt. I'm in the painting stage now, the hernia is slowing me down.

Yeah well take care Joe , I have had a hernia strangulate on me . Bowel surgery is pretty unpleasant .

In my area, there are many auto repair shops that burn waste oil for heat in the winter. I never have a problem getting rid of my waste oil...

Yeah we got told that but our logburner

has been installed since 2014 and has not yet had the flue cleaned ........we only burn dry wood and/or coal . If you burn wet wood ...not rain wet but freshly cut wood then you will get a build up of creosote and that not only clogs the flue but can lead to a fire in the flue ,

Heated with a wood stove for 20 years. Never burnt anything but wood seasoned for one full year. Cleaned at the end of every summer and ended up taking out about 2 gallons of creosote each year....more than enough to burn your house down. Do yourself a favor and clean your chimney before you have a problem. My neighbor is on the fire dept, over half their fire calls are chimney fires in winter !

nah , The flue is clear , I take the double burner plate out , mirror and a torch ...can see all the way up to the flue cap . At worst there is a light dusting of soot right at the top and underside of cap .
I burn Macrocarpa , Gum ,Beach, demolition wood and a wee bit of Oregon pine , The Oregon is poof wood ....like poof and its gone . I think the trick is dry wood and every now and then give it a good rark up , dont leave it smouldering away .

i've had part of my poop chute already from cancer out so i am well aware.

I wear my belt low and have a pair of winter socks down there to hold things in.

was thinking that yesterday. I will be burning some junk wood so i will need to keep clean. Against my need to have things centered/balanced i am prob going to run thru the roof which will put it about a foot or so off the center of the wall. I had planned to put in the corner and follow the roof line then poke out the side but that is a lot of bends.

surgery scheduled for 2 Oct so won't make much if any progress until prob early nov unless i can get the boys over for a day of work in trade for free food.


So figured out i was overthinking it on the roof penetration - read up on how the chimney box works so all good there.

The Class A sizes are not uniform so need the box up to be same company. Down below is still not decided. How bad would it be from a draft and safety to have the thing in the corner like I want, up to the 'attic' and 45 to the roof penetration with another 45 there? That gives me my location and would it allow more heat to radiate from the extra pipe?

I dunno so much about log burners , but when I was running the show I had two gas fitters installing gas fires and one thing I learnt is that you cant take to much heat out of the flue otherwise the flow aint so good ....the exhaust being cooler . Im pretty sure the more heat lost out of the flue the more it will need cleaned ....I dunno how youd clean around 45 deg bends . You would just about have to dismantle it

Recon you could go straight up an out the roof with no bends and still put the heater in the corner,?
