Re: Why why why...

Wow! What a bunch of grumps! I might go so far as to say fogies.

At 67 yo I'm actually a fogy myself, but I enjoy listening to open V-8s roaring up and down the Res. Different strokes, I guess. In all my conversations with other boaters I've never heard one complain about the louder boats. Maybe it's a local thing.

I was thinking the same thing reading this thread.

The sound of my Mercury Racing 525 MPI at 5300 rpm would upset some folks I guess.

I turning 70 this year, and it still makes my old heart beat a little faster. The only place left with no speed limit.

Those that don't get it never will.

seems like airplanes go pretty fast without speed limits...... I don't recall seeing any speed limit signs in the sand dunes or the salt flats or outside the pit at Talledega. Yep only place left

Since this is a boat forum I would assume without reservation he is talking about on water.

sure he was... he stated "the only place left with no speed limit" do you propose that he meant some certain place in the water or do you think he was saying water had no speed limits verses the rest of the world........ I think it was the latter:facepalm:

besides for the most part this thread isn't about speed.... the op's boat certainly isn't any faster because it is loud

form should always follow function...... loud pipes on a slow boat is just the opposite.

yes 55 is slow.... fast boats have a throttle man and a pilot

My buddy's Donzi ZX ran in the low 70's and was very quiet and not particularly exciting to ride in either.

"Man, a lot of these guys in iboats sure are an uptight crew".

I disagree about being uptight or even a grump. Its a matter of peace and quiet. That nippy little dog next door that barks all night long bothers me as well. One thing you can say, though, is that the ones quietly enjoying a peaceful day on the water floating and talking to your friends won't bother anyone.

LOL Agallant! I saw a bumper sticker that read something like this..."BMW 3 series...'cause chicks can't tell the difference". Guess it could apply to boats. :)

And another one: "A man's intelligence is inversely proportional to his tolerance of noise"

Re: Why why why...

On my lake there are a few especially loud boats, just enough to add some "color". In my cove we have a couple blown 70's jet boats and a pickle fork with twin 300's. They pretty much only run a couple times a month and nobody complains. They will take you for a ride if you ask.

A bunch of runabouts with open headers would kind of spoil it however.

Re: Why why why...

my thoughts on thru hulls is. why? if they don't do some work, what is there use?
on my local watering hole, there's usually one or three out on a 2000K sq are lake on the weekends in height of boating season. that's kind of a small lake, and ya can hear them from any where on the lake. since they're not usually out 'all' day long, i can live with them, as if i had a choice, which i don't.
one thing i think is that, if the local leo is out that day, the folks with the thru hulls will get noticed prior to me.... :)

Re: Why why why...

just imagine how silly you'd feel running wide open with pipes echoing for miles and getting overtaken by a sail boat.

"The team smashed not only the nautical mile record* by over 5 knots averaging over 55.3 knots... but also raised their own 'Outright speed' record* to 59.38 knots over 500 meters hitting a peak speed of 64.78 knots (74.55 mph, 120 kph)."

Re: Why why why...

Our traditional thru outdrive exhaust Cobalt gives just enough audible growl from the big block to drown out the Admiral from conversation while underway.

There are a few bigger vessels with thru hulls on our home lake that definitely sound cool strait off the manifold, but get old after about 30 seconds, especially when overtaken by another runabout or go fast.

Re: Why why why...

personaly I love the sound of a open header / over the transom high performance boat but if your in a cruiser or runabout it is just "Hey look At ME!!!"
Back in the day I had 454 Chevy Pick Up trucks plus a 1990 350 TBI pick up with dual glass packs but as I got older I appreciate the quite .
The truck I have now is a 2008 6.0 aluminum block Silverado that make alot more power than either .
A buddy has a 44ft Gibson House Boat with twin 350s open exhaust. love the sound for about 15 seconds then is just obnoxious.

Re: Why why why...

Why not record a dragstrip on an Ipod and when you feel the need to feel special just put the ear plugs in and let it rip? You could even do it at work just to make you feel cool all the time.

Re: Why why why...

I only picture the guys with the wakeboard boats with all of the graphics, tower speakers, and huge chrome wheels on their Avalanche tow vehicles (as if that isn't all wakeboard boat owners) to be the ones to have closets full of Ed Hardy shirts. I don't care what your Cobalt sounds like, my mind just doesn't draw the parallel between douchey clothes and I/Os!

WOW. I am not a fogie but I am 36, don't wear name brand clothes and I drive a GMC Safari daily. I like the sound of a V8 on open pipes. I also have a home theatre with a 15" powered sub and Polk Audio all around.
