LOL Agallant! I saw a bumper sticker that read something like this..."BMW 3 series...'cause chicks can't tell the difference". Guess it could apply to boats. :)

Re: Why why why...

because "I want" EVERYONE has too......... You think most people like it but MOST hate it and simply don't say anything....

VERY few new boats come with noise holes cut in the back...... thankfully most of the people who can afford a new boat have enough sense to want it quiet and in most places it's illegal tho not enforced nearly enough.... Same thing with cars.... sure there are always high school kids and even a few "adults" running around with fart cans on their honda's but the new ones are whisper quiet and often faster than the hotrodded ones.

Smoke has the general view I think, it is without a doubt the most obnoxious thing we as boaters sometimes are forced to listen too. It is very undesirable for the majority of boaters who seek peace and quiet, to recharge the batteries after a hard week working. The reason that Cobalt doesn't make it standard is because the cost and demand is not good business. No one would buy their boats if they all were as noisy as the few that do use it. Around my waters the cops will write tickets for folks that elect to ruin everyone else's day by running open headers around busy locations. Pleasure boaters have names for the guys who run these boats, but it isn't iboats friendly so we will leave it at that.

Re: Why why why...

I would rather go with a corsa 'quick & quiet' (or something like that) for the thru-hull portion of the captain's call. Noise should be muffled, hardly anyone wants to hear it for miles around.

Formula used to have what they called "Silent Thunder", which was a permanent thru-hull exhaust into an extended swim platform assembly that muffled the noise. It gave a nice macho V8 sound at idling, but was fairly quiet underway. I had it on my F-242. They have done away with it, probably for cost reasons.

I'm not sure if Cobalt ever had anything similar. I do like the 'capacity' that you get from thru-hull exhaust, just without the noise.

Yes, Corsa quick n quite is what I have now. The silent thunder idea sounds pretty neat as the beefy idle is what I like best.

Re: Why why why...

Our Stratos came factory with a through the hull exhaust. The exhaust exits right at the waterline and is only really noticeable when we are stationary at idle. I've often wondered if there was a way to route the exhaust through the prop on our boat even though it didn't come that way from the factory. here are a couple of pictures.

The exhaust exits under the swim platform. When we're in or near a marina, or when we're in a cove around other boaters we run slower to try to be respectful of all who are on the water. I wish I had a way to quiet her down at times though.

No tix from the police on the reservoir where we usually boat. It's very evident too, as there are quite a few boats with this option. Glad I can make it quite though as a couple of the lakes we visit have ordinances against it.

At the end of the day though I still want to find a newer used Cobalt with an 8.1L and captains call. Yes, I'm the guy that goes to the a la carte white napkin restaurant and orders a can of Busch Light.

Can't wait for summer!

Re: Why why why...

here is my take. I have a slightly warmed small block that will soon be a stroker. I have thought of switcheable exhaust for a few reasons mainly because I have a great line on a set of CMI headers and tips.

My beer-swilling friends say go for the loud exhaust for the look at me factor because "it sounds cool"

the Mrs and the rest of her girlfriends like me to head to a quiet cove and let them converse, drink wine and get tanned. That means they like it quiet and not attracting attention. So I drive as quiet as possible and smile like crazy when we drop anchor :D

plus, most of the go-fast sausage boats around here really do go really really fast, and I have no desire to be a poser and dont have the pocket book to play in that league

You have to pull the engine, remove the block off plate, and install a Y pipe if you want thru prop exhaust.

Also don't get me wrong, I CAN see the appeal and even went as far as buying two complete merc silent choice systems at a GREAT price for my 28'er but then decided not to install them after thinking about what goes through my head every time I hear someone else with open exhaust on the water (usually something like "another &^$&^ *&%*% *&%&$$ thinks he's cool" and didn't want people thinking that about me so they sat on the shelf.... looking back I'm SOOO glad I didn't put em on.

If I need loud I have an offroad only jeep on 1 ton axles and 37" irok's with a built 350 running a flow master muffler ...... The biggest difference is that trees n hills absorb sound unlike flat water AND I'm just above idle 90% of the time and only snap the throttle here and there for a couple seconds.

Till the bow hunter out there, trying to get away from it all, hears the $&@?!$ in the off road vehicle trying to sound cool!

I wheel on private property.... any bow hunters encountered are trespassers and should be thankful that they heard us coming and got a chance to clear out.... besides it has a muffler and as I said unlike boats autos cruise at low throttle no where near the constant noise of a thruhull boat exhaust.

That's true... my Kaw tops out at 62 mph and my 30 cruiser will only do 48 mph but then I no longer own my 17' champ boat hydroplane.

YOU asked the question.... we gave you honest answers.... no need to take offense...

Wow! What a bunch of grumps! I might go so far as to say fogies.

At 67 yo I'm actually a fogy myself, but I enjoy listening to open V-8s roaring up and down the Res. Different strokes, I guess. In all my conversations with other boaters I've never heard one complain about the louder boats. Maybe it's a local thing.

I'm an old fogie as well. But my kids aren't and they hate the noise too. When we go out, whether with family or friends, the best part of the day includes the converstions we have.

When we tie up at the city dock and see the illegal exhausts come by there is one thing for sure - everyone in the boat has their eyes and thumbs glued to a phone and nobody is talking...

TOTALLY agree Bassman! I too am from and boat in Iowa. Maybe us Iowans just try to stay young at heart or rude according to many others. I honestly mean this in a non harassing non finger pointing way but I totally see what you are saying...on our way back from a family Christmas tonight I was thinking to myself "Man, a lot of these guys in iboats sure are an uptight crew". On the Res we boat on, the super loud go fasts seem to get a pretty positive vibe. Must just be my rose colored glasses!

Good point but in this area of the state, no, due to the fact that the nearest lake that accepts wake speeds is another Res.

When I was young during the late 60's and seventies I liked open headers in anything I had. Now at may age I hate it and figure anytime I am getting disturbed by someone else's loudness I just figure I am just getting paid back for when I was a jerk, sigh.

Re: Why why why...

I think some of this comes down to where you boat. At the lake (25 mile res) we use unless you are at the ramp or hanging out with others at some popular spots it is rare to see another boat within a mile or so. Most spots are 2-3 miles wide and the longest stretch of water you can see is probably 4 miles. There are houses on maybe the first 7 or so miles the rest is sand cliffs 1/4 to 3/4 mile high depending on how far down you are. The jets and bigger boats play at the lower end and don't bother anyone.

We have not restrictions on our lakes except for a few small ones that don't allow motors and you would want to boat on them anyway.

So like I said, it depends on where you boat.

Re: Why why why...

I love the sound of a healthy V-8. As I age, I'm growing away from straight pipes though, and I enjoy something that is throaty, and not obnoxiously loud. I've had a lot of muscle cars with aftermarket exhaust, but never a boat.

When I'm at cruising speed on my boat(23-30knots), the wind noise usually makes it just loud enough that my passengers can't hold a conversation. I'd love to have a slightly more throaty exhaust rumble in the boat, but I'm pretty sure that a flowmaster boat kit either doesn't exist, or it's crazy expensive.
