because "I want" EVERYONE has too......... You think most people like it but MOST hate it and simply don't say anything....
VERY few new boats come with noise holes cut in the back...... thankfully most of the people who can afford a new boat have enough sense to want it quiet and in most places it's illegal tho not enforced nearly enough.... Same thing with cars.... sure there are always high school kids and even a few "adults" running around with fart cans on their honda's but the new ones are whisper quiet and often faster than the hotrodded ones.
I would rather go with a corsa 'quick & quiet' (or something like that) for the thru-hull portion of the captain's call. Noise should be muffled, hardly anyone wants to hear it for miles around.
Formula used to have what they called "Silent Thunder", which was a permanent thru-hull exhaust into an extended swim platform assembly that muffled the noise. It gave a nice macho V8 sound at idling, but was fairly quiet underway. I had it on my F-242. They have done away with it, probably for cost reasons.
I'm not sure if Cobalt ever had anything similar. I do like the 'capacity' that you get from thru-hull exhaust, just without the noise.
Smoke has the general view I think, it is without a doubt the most obnoxious thing we as boaters sometimes are forced to listen too. It is very undesirable for the majority of boaters who seek peace and quiet, to recharge the batteries after a hard week working. The reason that Cobalt doesn't make it standard is because the cost and demand is not good business. No one would buy their boats if they all were as noisy as the few that do use it. Around my waters the cops will write tickets for folks that elect to ruin everyone else's day by running open headers around busy locations. Pleasure boaters have names for the guys who run these boats, but it isn't iboats friendly so we will leave it at that.
Our Stratos came factory with a through the hull exhaust. The exhaust exits right at the waterline and is only really noticeable when we are stationary at idle. I've often wondered if there was a way to route the exhaust through the prop on our boat even though it didn't come that way from the factory. here are a couple of pictures.
The exhaust exits under the swim platform. When we're in or near a marina, or when we're in a cove around other boaters we run slower to try to be respectful of all who are on the water. I wish I had a way to quiet her down at times though.
Also don't get me wrong, I CAN see the appeal and even went as far as buying two complete merc silent choice systems at a GREAT price for my 28'er but then decided not to install them after thinking about what goes through my head every time I hear someone else with open exhaust on the water (usually something like "another &^$&^ *&%*% *&%&$$ thinks he's cool" and didn't want people thinking that about me so they sat on the shelf.... looking back I'm SOOO glad I didn't put em on.
If I need loud I have an offroad only jeep on 1 ton axles and 37" irok's with a built 350 running a flow master muffler ...... The biggest difference is that trees n hills absorb sound unlike flat water AND I'm just above idle 90% of the time and only snap the throttle here and there for a couple seconds.
I wheel on private property.... any bow hunters encountered are trespassers and should be thankful that they heard us coming and got a chance to clear out.... besides it has a muffler and as I said unlike boats autos cruise at low throttle no where near the constant noise of a thruhull boat exhaust.Till the bow hunter out there, trying to get away from it all, hears the $&@?!$ in the off road vehicle trying to sound cool!

That's true... my Kaw tops out at 62 mph and my 30 cruiser will only do 48 mph but then I no longer own my 17' champ boat hydroplane. If your Jeep is anything like your boats its not going to be fast enough to catch them!

YOU asked the question.... we gave you honest answers.... no need to take offense...
Wow! What a bunch of grumps! I might go so far as to say fogies.
At 67 yo I'm actually a fogy myself, but I enjoy listening to open V-8s roaring up and down the Res. Different strokes, I guess. In all my conversations with other boaters I've never heard one complain about the louder boats. Maybe it's a local thing.

ever consider that maybe they made it unpleasant enough for the other crowd that they simply avoids that res?
