Makes sense, especially if the one that's dragging is on the inside of the turn. Hope it's that simple. :)

Turn spring #5 so it hooks on the keeper opposite direction of the other. See if the spring end is rubbing on the backing plate. The hook of the spring should come up from the bottom and around the pin.

The spring is fine and is oriented correctly. If you don't believe me, look at the picture in the link I posted above.

I think Lcoop's brakes are working correctly. He needs to try them in the parking lot like he said.

So basically what you are saying from before is once you pull forward a few few feet, there is no grabbing or is that what you need to test?

That's what I need to test. Every time I've jacked the trailer up and found them to be grabbing it has been immediately following backing it into the driveway. I've never tried to pull forward again without first releasing pressure at a bleed valve. I discovered it by accident when I was replacing the tires (immediately after backing it in) and have been struggling with it ever since. I'm hopeful that the test will confirm I'm just a ijit.

...What if the brakes have been working right the entire time and I just thought there was a problem because of my lack of knowledge? ....

Does the famous quote, "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes!" mean anything to you!

I agree, except they should release promptly even when backing up.
His draging brakes are only a nusance issue right now.
But, they aren't going to improve on their own.
The adjuster falling out is an indication of things to come.

Do it right, or do it again! :D

Okay Willie, you lost me with the Godfather reference:confused:, but according to the manufacturer the brakes should not release promptly when backing up.

I'll defer to the manufacturer on the brake release issue.

If you have to explain a joke it isn't going to be funny!

The quote would refer to the fact that if we just spent a day and a half, and 50 posts, trying to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place....
Someone just might be be tempted to do grevious harm to you! :D

As in, "lcoop sleeps with the fishes! ? "

See, I told you it wasn't going to be funny!

Come on. You know you enjoyed it. I just hope I'm right that I was wrong, or is that......... well, now I'm confused. Thanks a lot. This is all your fault.

The adjuster falling out was due to his applying the master cylinder with the drums off. There was way more travel than there will ever be in real life.

Not an issue.

These were the ones I was refering to. A little trick i use to see if my brakes are worrking, my trailer wheel width is wider than my truck is. I will get the trailer tires on a grassy shoulder part of the road and hit the brakes. I do it on both sides. since they are in grass it takes a little less effort to get them to lock up. A little easier on the equipment this way.

Re: Why Are My Brakes Suddenly Locking Up?

... The aduster fell out ...

We figured you would have this fixed by now, But....

Yes I am back, still fixated on that adjuster falling out thing again! :D

I just got back from the trailer parts store.
They had a whole shelf full of all sizes of electric and hydraulic bake assemblies.

I couldn't resist. I acuated the levers, pushed the pistons, and spread the shoes as far as they would go.
There was no indication that any of the adjusters were ever going to fall out.
The spring just above the adjuster kept the shoes tight against the adjuster all the time.
In fact, the adjuster was the only part of the assembly that didn't move.
The shoes slid all over the place, with the hinge point tending to be the connection with the adjuster.
Everything stayed in their relative positions no matter what was pushed or how far.
And returned to their starting points when released.

I still think the shoes are binding against the back plate and the adjuster issue is an indication of that. :D

When you say the brakes are locking up; Do you mean locking, as in, "They barely move either direction with great effort, " or is it more like, "They are dragging alot but clear up if I spin them forward and back a bit." ???

I am sure you have looked at this and it is a real oddity but how about the width of the shoes, I ran across that once on a truck the new ones were 1/16 wider than the old ones.

Re: Why Are My Brakes Suddenly Locking Up?

Well, we have met the enemy and he is us. I towed the rig to a big parking lot stopping hard several times along the way, then stopped hard in the parking lot and jacked it up immediately. The wheels spun freely. I then dropped it and backed it the length of the parking lot (up a steady incline) and jacked it up immediately after stopping and was again able to spin the wheels freely by hand. My verdict is there was nothing wrong with the brakes and I'm just a ijit. On the bright side, I've learned a lot and didn't replace anything that didn't need to be replaced any way. Thanks for all the input guys.

Such is the price of an education! :)
Glad it is resolved!

Have a good night, now you can sleep without worrying.
