Re: Why 2 wheel drive trucks are useless...

I used to have an 01 GMC Sonoma with a 6cyl 2wd 1/2 ton. Pulled out of any launch ramp i been to no issue including the sand ramp at ponderay lake. I have a 20' boat and trailer weigh approx 2500lbs combined. Had numerous people tell me i will not make it out of the nice conrete ramps with slime. Made a bet with a guy easiest 5 bucks i ever made.

Now i drive a 1972 gmc 2500 custom camper 2wd and havent had any ramp issues with it either.

Im not dissing 4 wheel drive, it has come in handy when i drove a ford trcuk and got stuck crossing a deep railroad track with a car trailer. Lock the hubs throw the transfer case in gear and tranny in first and it crawled right out. I guess it all depends on what you need your truck for and personal preferences :)

I get a kick out of the soccer mom types driving about 70 on glare ice in 4WD. As long as no one is in there way, it is especially entertaining to see them swap ends repeatedly at that speed, and even more entertaining to hear them exclaim, "I have no idea why it would have done that, I was in 4 wheel drive."

Before I offer to help them get out of the ditch, or unwrapped from a tree, I always explain to them that in 4 wheel drive,
If one wheel breaks loose, all 4 have to break loose.

Put the durned thing in 2 wheel drive and drive reasonable around here.

Don't get me wrong. I own a 4WD. It's for hauling a little bit now and then, and if the snow's deep in the woods, or the mud is deep in the driveway, I'll use 4WD.

I think he would have done better if he would get rid of the low-profile tires. I use a 2x wheel drive Chev Silverado with a good set of all season tires..never had an issue and my boat and trailer tip the scale just over 4000lbs.

Yep, he needs to get rid of those "purdy" rims and low profile tires. All he needs to do is air down his tires and stop trying to gas his way out of the situation. He did the right thing at first by going forward and backwards but a little too much foot on the gas.

I see this all the time on Hatteras Island. People seem to think more throttle will get you out of the sand. Just remember, air down and stop as soon as your tires start to slip. Go forward and back while keeping your front wheels strait and find the nearest ruts to get into.

I bought my Cherokee mainly to ride on the beach. The 4x4 along with the in-line 6 cylinder is a true asset. I hear ya jeep owners! After all they were the first 4 wheel drive!

Yes, a 4wd without the locking rear diff isn't 4wd. It's like a $50 option which again should be standard issue. I could see someone getting overconfident and stuck easily. If your not an off roader, you never really know what your truck isn't capable of until it's too late. The commercials make it seem like they will never get stuck. I think it's hard to argue that a properly equipped 4wd doesn't have an advantage over a 2wd in the same situation. Watching that sand blast video I kept waiting for the fronts to kick in but he didn't spring for the AWD in the case of that Trailblazer SS.

LMAO! You guys need to call yourself the "TVWB" - the Tracked Vehicle Wanna Be's! Anybody serious about traction figured out that they needed tracked vehicles about a hundred years ago!

See, you learn stuff every day on this forum! Everybody else in the world except noworries79 thought that the first 4 wheel drive was the Spyker 60 race car built in Amsterdam (capital of the Netherlands) in 1903.

The first four-wheel drive car, as well as hill-climb racer, with internal combustion engine, the Spyker 60 H.P., was presented in 1903 by Dutch brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker of Amsterdam. The two-seat sports car, which was also the first ever car equipped with a six-cylinder engine, is now an exhibit in the Louwman Collection (the former Nationaal Automobiel Museum) at Raamsdonksveer in The Netherlands.

Ahhh yes, that may be true 45auto, but where are these vehicles today? I guess I should've said the first domestic 4wd that is still around today.

I'm glad you got a little enjoyment outta that one. :)

looks like 2wd works well as a sandblaster

Guy just doesn't know how to drive on sand. He would would have buried a 4x4 by the way he was driving. Thanks for the video that was definitely funny watching that poor dude's frustration. Power isn't everything, sometimes a little patience and finesse will get you unstuck.

Re: Why 2 wheel drive trucks are useless...

my truck, 04.5 dodge cummins diesel 2whl drive q cab 6 spd with 86k on the o.d.
maintenance done by me including oil changes, filters and well everything.
just pulled the wheels thinking it was ready for brakes.
the pads on it don't look much thinner than the new one so left it alone.
now this truck hardly ever pulls anything and most miles are highway.
developed my own cold air intake, filtration is nothing like anybody is using and i mean nothing.
no will not show pics but have 65k on this system and the impeller blades look perfect.
will take a white paper towel to it any time you want and you won't find one speck of dust.
takes 3 to 5 seconds to change the filter, yup!
she runs perfect and this engine i really believe will go a million miles.
the engine does not get dirty, it just does't.
something i did again and cool as can be, no i won't.
tran and dif on royal purple.
made not bought my own shifting set up and this nv5600 will sound like an automatic if i want.
don't care what you have of even if you buy this or not but one sweet truck.
debadged and steel wheel, kind of a sleeper.
your turn.:D

Ummm, all good and everything but how does this apply to the conversation.

You made a BHAF setup, I did too before, but run a AAF setup on my HTT stainless Turbo. I have a full buolt race automatic from Goerends, and my truck puts down some serious numbers and still gets 18 mpg, with 4wd! Mine's a sleeper too, I even have rusty doors and a rusty bed, it surprises many!

Tell us more about your shifting setup. Why won't you show pics???:confused:

I have a 4WD but I seldom ever use anything but 2WD and have never needed to use it at the ramp. In fact I don't even need to get my back wheels wet when I launch or retrieve the boat.

I used to ride at Hatteras without lowering the pressure in my tires, I would just go slowly. Speaking of outer banks, I really miss that area. I haven't been since I moved to TN.
