Where do you get long aluminum rivets?

I read in a post a while ago that you could get long (.75 inch) rivets at the local auto parts store, since home centers don't have them that long.

I've been to a couple, and all i could find is .75 inch steel rivets, that are a #11 drill dia. They seem to be close to the 3/16 rivets I normally use, but don't want steel rivets in my aluminum boat holding the floor to the stringers.

Where should I be looking?

If you have a Fastenal around you. I've gotten the 3/16 aluminum rivets. They have them in various lengths. Even when I specal order takes 3 days and get a bag of 50 for around $15 with shipping.

I got mine at Northern Tool. They have a decent selection, and the price isn't bad considering you avoid shipping. I also got a nice two-handed rivet gun from Harbor Freight for $15 which works very well (beats my old craftsman riveter hands down)

Re: Where do you get long aluminum rivets?

Thanks for the info...

When the give you the grip range, why do they specify a min dimension?
My experience is that they'll pull down to almost nothing.

With 1/2 ply, glass on both sides, and trying to rivet to aluminum stringers, I'm right at the 5/8 length.

Should I err on the long side and get the .625 to .750 or the .500 to .625?

I got lucky I guess and ACE hardware had aluminum rivets 3/16 x 3/4 which are good.

Go for the .625 - .750 and you should be fine.

i'm not sure but down here 1/2 ply is more like 19/32 or something like that, don't forget to figure that

thanks guys,
I'll take another look in some other ACE hardware stores.

McM Carr had 100 for $7, which is pretty cheap, but requires shipping.
I'm going to check out Grainger, which I hadn't thought of until McM came up because there is one local.

3/4" body length rivet is only good for 3/8" to 1/2" material thickness, according to Mc Carr.

At $10.16 per 100 you might want to use these:

Aluminum rivet and mandrel as well as extra big head diameter of .65" which your fiberglass will like versus standard head diameters.

I love McCarr as anything I order today will be here by noon tomorrow via regular ups Atlanta to Pensacola.
