Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Wella catch that I know of, wasn't me but was someone I know. They were fishing for Mahi Mahi about 20 miles offshore in the atlantic. Dolphin (Mahi Mahi)like to hang out under just about anything that floats. Well they found something floating and were fishing it caught 3 dolphin and in the course of fishing someone hooked into the floater and pulled it in. It was a duffle bag filled with 30 Kilos of 100% pure cocaine! Over a million dollars worth. it was turned into the to the sheriff's office. What a catch huh? byw that was 2 days ago 5-20. kinda makes my gator look like a bluegil.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Fishing mouth of small bay one day with Grandpa, "God Bless his old soul". Small lake close to home here in MN. Trolling fore walleye, he is using his old Johnson closed reel and old metal fishing rod Which I still have. He gets a hit and it is a fighter finally gets it to boat and I an about to net it but too big for net, it flops out of net and line breaks. Gramps starts tieing on another lure (red white daredevil) and tells me to keep trolling back and forth over this spot. I tell him he is nuts if he thinks he can catch that thing again but about 10 mins. later bang he has a bite and a shorter fight than before, we land a 14lb. northern with his other lure. He removes lures snap quick picture and put her back. I fish this lalake quite often just have to smile every time I pass that bay.

My cousin and i were trolling in a 12' boat with an electric trolling one day ,zig-zaging back and forth across the river when he had a hit that fought like crazy. The monster was strippin line to no end...yup, you guessed it...he caught a running 36 lb. thrust Minnkota.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

I used to fish off a bridge, a popular spot for walleye at night, and after losing lots of lures on the same snag i got an idea, to use a cable and a large snag hook, i pulled the snag out, it was a huge box-spring, conviently weighted in the corners with cement blocks with over 200 heddon sonars on it, hundreds of jig heads, lures, and a ton of lead split shot etc. we knocked the cement blocks out, dragged the whole thing to the parking lot loaded it in the truck and I worked on that sucker for months, removing everything i could salvage , from some SOB's lure trap I got a lifetime supply of heddon sonars, lead, and more jig heads than i can ever use, and you bet your #@# im going to check for another trap again on the same bridge.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

not the weirdest thing ever caught, but appreciated it getting away. it seems that I hooked a rather large snapping turtle on a plastic worm. seeing that the turtle was hooked just inside it's mouth, i asked my partner to take the long nose pliers and retrieve the hook. well when he did the turtle snapped down with such force that my buddy went into near cardiac arrest. after he recovered, he was glad to still have ten fingers. we decided to cut the line, giving up the hook, worm, and the pair of long nose pliers.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Well here goes. After fishing one nightin N.Minn. I left my rigs in the boat thinking i would be back out in a couple of hours. As i walked out the back door Fred(Blue Herron) was
on my dock. Now Fred and i go back a couple of years. I usually put a couple of perch on the dock so he does not have to work so hard. Now back to my rigs. I had left a fairly large chub on my line the night before. Next thing you know he ups and takes off with my chub and my 150 dollar rod and reel. How he he did not get hooked I still cannot figure how he didn't get wrapped up. About 2o foot from shore he drops it in about 10 foot of very cold water. Needless to say I got wet and Fred gets his rations now without fail. JW

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Here we go again. One morning I got up to do a little early fishing in N.Minn. It was just getting light and their was a little mist hanging over the cattails. I noticed what I thought was a log resting in the cattails. Being the good samaritan I am I thought I would go out and pull it to shore so no one would hit it. Lo and behold when I reached my subject I found it wasn't a log but a 40 inch Muskie with a 5lb northern stuck through its gill. My friend had it mounted.

You can tell he is lying because his lips are moving

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

One day a few years ago, I was out fishing in a Tarpon tournament. We'd been having a relatively bad day. Lots of hookups, but nhever managed to land one. Lines kept snapping on every hookup. Eventually, we landed a Tarpon. Lo and behold, he has eight hooks/leaders in his mouth, all of them ours, and all from that day. He had followed us a good 30 miles, and never learned his lesson.

The same year, we hooked a tiny little tarpon, maybe 80 pounds, which was promptly devoured by a shark, who managed to hook himself. The shark was then consumed by another shark (quite a sight), who wound up hooked as well.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

My tournament partner was prefishing with his dad. They were dragging tubes, my buddies dad, felt a hit, set the hook and fought a 3 lb smallie to the boat.

Cool that was the third fish from that spot. Perfect! We were on fish!

Well what was the wierd part??? Well while fighting the smallie in we noticed it was hooked near its' butt. Nope it wasn't snagged in the fish, but the hook point on the jighead in the tube was hooked THROUGH THE EYE OF A JIG HEAD STICKING OUT OF THE BASS' BUTT!!! When unhooking the fish, the partially digested jighead just broke off becasue it was so rusty, but it was tough enough to hold fish to be landed...

What are the chances of that happening...

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Once, many years ago, while fly fishing an oxbow lake off the Ouachita river in South Arkansas I caught a wild canary (yellow finch). My fly line wrapped around its wing on my back cast and as I made my forward cast the canary bit me in the back of the head and fell into the bottom of the boat. It lived.

Meaux

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

I've got two stories, one that happened to me, one that didn't, but I heard about it. First the one that didn't happen to me...I used to work for a police department in the central valley in california. I ran into a call one night about a fisherman who caught something troubling out of the delta. Now, you have to understand I worked in and around the city of Stockton California, not the nicest city in the world. So, it has happened that bodies have been discovered in the delta quite a bit. Probably about 10 a year if not more. So, that's pretty much what I was expecting to see when I got there. But, instead the fisherman had hooked an old .38 revlover pistol that was in a tied up plastic baggy. There were still live cartridges in the pistol and there was two empty casings. After checking the perfectly intact serial numbers the gun was found to have been involved in a murder some 40 years ago! The rounds in the chamber fired out of a lab gun. The pistol ended up solving a murder unsolved, although the suspect died 8 years before the pistol was found!

Ok, now my story! An old friend of mine (75), his son in law (weighed 350 lbs.) and I rented a wooden 15' john boat with a 9.9 merc from a marina in Soquel California and went fishing in the ocean. I was only 14 or 15, and there was enough wait in that boat to keep us bailing water every half hour! We were trolling for mackerel and looking salmon later in the day. A few hours later we still had nothing. Suddenly my old friends line jerked and the pole just about left the boat. He jumped on it, and I steered the stick steer motor to the side so the broad side of the boat would hold us better in the swells. He fought what ended up being a big mackarel (I think) for about 5 minutes. Finally the fish was in sight and his son in law was about to net when a 9 foot shark suddenly came torpedoing from the depths and smacked the mackarel! He not only got the mackarel, he also got the entire leader and the rod tip of my friends pole! Needless to say the shark was hooked with about 5 feet of line out! It began to really rock our boat and it mouthed our wooden boat several times! We were a little leary because he was about to tip us! We cut the line, but the shark wouldn't leave, he kept lunging at the boat and kept trying to get us! Somehow another pull had slipped down and he had bitten the hook in the splashing and lunging. Now he was hooked again. He started that rolling his eyes back, and rolling next to the boat nearly taking the pole out of the boat. Finally my old friend grabbed the flare gun and launched one down his through since it was getting to be a pretty serious safety concern for our lives! The shark closed it's mouth in shock and this orange smoke started pouring out. I started socking it in the head till it stopped moving. We roped the shark around the gills and headed in, we'd had enough for one day. At the marina we explained what happened to a local coast guard crew and fish and game officer. They understood and said it was no illegal what we did. We didn't want the shark, so we gave it to some asian folks on the pier. They had that thing gutted and on the grill in 10 minutes! It tasted good! But, the mouth area tasted a little bit like sulfer! :) James Massey

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

O.K. get ready,The first time I took my son out fishing, he was only 5. We were drifting at the stink house at Little Egg Inlet N.J. He was using a toy snoopy rod baited for fluke. He hooked a fish, but in process of bringing him in, the rod broke at the three way swivel. The swivel slipped down the other rods line, and hooked itself on the other hook.It turned out to be a 10 lb fluke,of course his response was,- hey dad lets get another one like that. He didn't realize that was the biggest fluke I caught in 30 years of fishing!!!Good memory, that was 20 years ago.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Years ago I was in Brazil and went fishing in a very large river, the Parana River on the Brasil/Bolivia border. We were catching Piranha by using chunks of meat in a #4 hook, with a wire leader. The school of fish got so excited in the feeding frenzy that we began holding the bait a few inches above the surface of the water and the Piranha would jump right out of the water, several at a time, biting at the bait. It would take about 30 seconds before one would hook itself. By the way, Piranha taste very good when filleted and pan-fried. There are 11 sub-species of Piranha I was told. The littlest sub-species are about the size of a shiner when full grown. But their teeth are still very sharp ans with each bite they take a chunk of meat the size of a nickel. The largest Piranha come from the San Francisco River in NE Brasil and they are jet black. I have seen some that are about 15-17 inches long, 9-10 inches high, and weigh over 5 pounds. Each of their bites takes a chunk of meat the size of a plumb! And like their other Piranha cousins, they always travel in schools. There's just one rule when fishing for Piranha, keep all body parts of out the water! :(

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

I have several weird ones.
Once snagged, fought, and boated a barnacle encrusted fire extinguisher.
Another time, some kind of old automobile rear axle.
My Dad said it came out of a Model A Ford!
Fishing for largemouth bass once. Got a hit and started to reel in when it hit a snag. No fish I thought just a gigantic glob of seaweed. Managed to get it up to the bank and started to clean it off when I saw the fish inside this giant glob.
Turned out to be a 6.2pound bass. Still my personal best!

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

Two years ago, caught a three-pound rockfish (striper) on my downrigger -- actually hooked the line attached to the fish on the business end, and the rod and reel it was towing on the other end. Last year, I almost caught a Bayliner that crossed my trolling lines, and then headed out to the bay -- with 200 yards of my line, before it broke off and got away.

Re: What's Your Weirdest Catch?

My grandfather went Muskie fishing in Canada every year. One year he knocked his Muskie pole in the water. 3 year later, he caught the pole.

Three years ago, I took my 7 year old out fishing. He caught a large bluegill. We put it on a stringer and were fishing for a while when there was a tug on the stringer you could feel in the boat. I pulled up the stinger and found that a biter had been taken out of the big bluegill. I looked down and saw snapping turtle with a 14 inch shell. Needles to say I bought a fish basket. Last week we were fishing in the same lake and we felt a tug on the fish basket. I look down and a snapping turtle (probably not the same one) was trying to climb the fish basket. I yanked the basket out of the water and the snapper came with it. He didn't let go until I had him almost in the boat. After he dropped off, I figured that was probably better than being bitten by the catch.

Earlier this summer, I casted into an empty boat house, the lure bounced off the walkway inside and then through a tire. That was the only thing that anyone caught that weekend.
