Sounds like an I/O to me, Jeremy. I will move it there for you.

post a pic of the hole in the transom. most likely it was a 3.0 liter with OMC drive

Post a picture of the instruments and throttle control. That will help ID between Merc and OMC both of which use that cutout.

Your best bet would to be to start looking for a donor boat with a good Merc motor and drive and put in it. No reason to go looking for OMC, they went out of business in 98 and people are trying to get rid of them.

Re: what type of engine was in my boat

based on the outline left by the old transom shield, you had an OMC drive. as Don stated, easy to switch to Mercruiser since the holes are the same.

this begs another question. on a 22 year old boat, why did they remove the drive in the first place? I suspect the drive was salvaged. if that is the case, then you most likely have bad stringers and floor as well.

Re: what type of engine was in my boat

this boat was a repo that the guy before me bought at an auction and the reason that we came up with was to sell the motor and stern drive to pay off the loan so it wouldn't hinder there credit but the floor is solid and i'm not sure what you mean by stringers.

Same remote control as my old boat. It had an OMC engine/drive.

Post some pics of the whole boat. You'll get lots of good advice on whether it is even worth it to re-power.

hope you really love the boat. its going to cost more to repop the boat than buying one you can drop in the water today.

Ayuh,.... It's a Sunbird,...

Nobody's gonna want buy it for Real money, as it wasn't but barely worth any Real money the day it was built....

It'll cost ya up to 10 Grand to put it together, 'n the Best you'll get for it would be Under 1/2 that...

If yer gonna rebuild/ refit old hulls, ya gotta start with a "Classic", that somebody's gonna wanta Buy, for Good Money...

Not a Sunbird, or Bayliner...

Btw,... Stringers are the framework that holds a hull together,...

I'm Bettin' the 1s in that boat are Rotten...

i put this boat in the water to make sure it floats before i took on the responsibility so if the stringers were rotten then it would have taken on water which is didn't correct??

Not necessarily, you can have rotten stringers, rotten transom, rotten decks and never take on a drop of water ........ just sitting there static.
Get up on plane and see what happens. Just sitting it in the water is a non test.

You said you put the boat in the water and it didn't leak, I didn't say to do it now  I just said it was a non-test by just putting it in the water.

That goes back to wondering what was in it before. We know it was an OMC, but no clue if it was a 3.0 or 4.3 so how can we tell you what the replacement would be.
Did the old motor mounts sit on the stringers or a front mount. I can't tell from sitting here. That would give you a hint at what the OEM engine was.

Re: what type of engine was in my boat

from looking at the bolts i'm guessing it was a front mount.

Re: what type of engine was in my boat

If it had a front mount that narrows it down to the Ford 2.3L engine or the GM 3.0L engine.
