Information Technology Director . . . been in the I.T. field for 22 years, but have not decided if I like it or not . . .

I think that I would rather be making boats :thumb:

I'm with ya! I've been in the IT field for 15 years and I haven't decided if I like it either. I would much rather be making boats!

I was in it for 12 years before I pulled the pin. Being an IT Manager finally did me in...... Left the city for the country, and like they say, the rest is history.... In summer the outdoors is my office, in winter, my truck................

Enterprise Architect - another IT guy.. Been doing It architecture since 1997 and been in the IT field for 23+ years overall. I wouldn't say I love it, but it is a pretty good gig as a means to an end. I make good money, I have regular hours, I don't work weekends, and have the postion to make an impact to the enterprise. In a nutshell I get paid to think, draw pictures, and influence others. Pretty much in that order.

Ran a Coca-Cola branch for about 12 years (part-time police officer during that time). Got sick of the corporate BS and went full-time with the police department. Took one heck of a pay cut, but was off of blood pressure medication within a year of quitting! Carrying a gun is actually less stressful than putting up with corporate idiots!

Funny you should mention this, I recently interviewed for an IT manager position and they offered me the job, the pay was about $20k more than I make now but I turned it down.. Too much stress, too many BS meetings to deal with, less time off, and office politics at the place were ridiculous.

Re: what is your job/title and do you love it

i am one of 5 people who can take rebar tie wire which has a breaking strenght of 3 hundred lbs and pull it apart with only my hands.
I got to chuckle about this. My first job out of welding school was an iron worker. We built the tall water towers you see everywhere. I was the youngest on the crew by 25-30 years. Always trying to impress the older guys. Then one day the owner of the campany called me aside. He said, the most import thing you learn over time is to work smarter, not harder. If you don't, you'll end up like him and he pointed over to the General Forman named Moose. Moose late 40's, 6'-2", probably #250 but had to be helped up out of a chair. Years of "humping" things had taken it's toll on his body.

For the past 10 years, I've been an Area Sales Manager and a Product Manager for a company that manufactures analytical equipment for the metals, plastic and paper industries. Prior to taking those positions, I ran the machine shop, managed the drafting and design department, mechanical engineer manager, managed the Projects office and Inside Sales support group.

You don't stay at a job for 35 years and not like it. I've spent the past 20 years traveling the world in comfort at someone elses expense.

i will admit i am hard on my body and i dont go around bulling my way around for 8hrs a day
but when push comes to shove i will admit its fun to show the young lads the power and strength i have.
i also work smart as well when i see 3 guys grunting to get a bar in place i will tell them, move over daddy will show you how its done
then i assess the situation for a minute get a prybar and move two or three bars over and then slide the remaining bars in nice and smooth

Well... I'm not really a Port-o-let pumper outer, I was just trying to make myself out to be a little more exotic/romantic/important than the construction worker I really am.;)

I started out as an apprentice commercial carpenter 35 yrs. ago, no one has to help me out of a chair and I can still swing a sledge hammer as good as any man on the job and better than most. I specialized in forming and placing concrete, and concrete flows through my veins! I can build a building from the footings to punch-out, but slogging through the mud and pouring concrete is the part I like the best. Pops always told me, "Boy, If you're gonna be dumb... ya gotta be tough".

I wasn't buying the Port-a-pottie line . . . your profile says "Construction", and you have mentioned concrete estimating in the past. . . :D

I am a Service Manager for a local alarm company. I install, service, troubleshoot and sell video surveillance equipment and residential and commercial intrusion alarms. It's not a glamorous job but I really enjoy it. With today's society it's almost imperative to have some kind of alarm and or camera system on your premise. I've been doing this for about 13 years now. Although I love this boating thing more. It's too bad a fella couldn't make a living at it.

For those on here, past and present, who served our countries.....many many thanks. A great career indeed.
