Lakeside oregon:

Known for all the mills being shut down and there is nothing here anymore for people to make a living, All retired people mostly and they wont pay for a tax base. Now we have no police, and its the drug capital of the Pacific Northwest! Thanks Libs, ya got what you wanted, so quit complaining about there not being any police, and money for schools. That money came from the timber sales you Idiots!!! Name calling intended!!

And thats how I feel.

Past or present KIZ?

Now, my hometown is known for Dowling College, and St. Johns University. 2 colleges in the same town is very challanging, trust me, I know!

In the past, my town was know for the Southside Sportsmens Club, which was founded by William K. Vanderbilt, Commodor Bourne (owner of the Singer Sewing Machine Company) and Bayard Cutting (World renowned hordiculturist), for the purpose of hunting and fishing. William K. Vanderbilts summer home was built in 1896, and is now Dowling College, Commodor Bourne's home, is now St. Johns University, and Bayard Cutting's home is now a museum. The other mansion that was built here, was called Pepperidge Hall, (I don't remember who owned that one), that was famous during prohibition, as a rum running outfit. It burned to the ground shortly after WWII. I use to play in the ruins of that building when I was a kid.

ENRON comes to mind???? and as I recall the same magazine that pegged Fort Wayne as stupid, picked Houston as the Fattest City in America. :D

Well, I live in Milton, 20 minutes from Pensacola. Milton was famous last century for producing massive tonnage of lumber. They cut down all the virgin pine, and that was the end of that. But Pensacola is home the Navy Blue Angels, it's the cradle of Navel Aviation, and the location of the National Aviation Museum. The east is Fort Walton Beach, home of Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field AFB. That MOAB bomb was developed at Eglin, as well as the Bunker Buster bombs. Air Force Special Operations is located Hurlburt Field, and they are always deploying the Middle East. Also, they have the Air Force Armament Museum.

However, soon Pensacola will be home to the sunken remains of the USS Oriskany, and will be a destination for divers and fishermen from all over the world.

History, thats what you will find here on Long Island KIZ.

First settlements date back to 1612!
The Indian tribes who settled this island long before any European arrived, the Montauks, the Wyandanches, the Connetquots, the Iriqious, the Mohawks, the Moriches, the Speonks, etc...
Whaling industy in Sag Harbor
First Federal Construction project, commisioned by President George Washington, The Montauk Lighthouse.
Battle of Long Island, American Revolution
Charles Lindburgs famous solo flight across the Atlantic, began in Mitchel Field.
Grumman Helcats, built in Bethpage, defeat Japanese forces throughout the Asian theatre.
Lunar Lander (LEM) lands on the moon, after being designed and constructed by the Grumman Corp. in Bethpage.
National Cradle of Aviation Museum and Long Island was deemed the Cradle of Aviation by the U.S. Congress, in 1968.

History, thats what Long Island has most to offer.

And, the west end of Long Island, is actually part of the 5 boros of New York City. Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island.

Re: What is your city/town known for?

SoulWinner,

I hate to argue with you on this, but Pensicola is not the Cradle of Aviation, Long Island is. Grumman Aircraft was here, so was Republic Aviation, as well as Sperry, Raytheon, Curtis Aircraft, Cesna, Lear, and Mitchel Field, where Lindburg made his historic solo trans-Atlantic flight. It has also been registered in the National Archieves, as the "Cradle of Aviation of the United States" in 1968.

Mitchel Field, Long Island, NY, is where the National "Cradle of Aviation Museum" is located, which was just opened in 1999.

Sorry to pop you bubble there, but...

Canastota, NY where I grew up is known for ONIONS (and all of us Sicilian Wop Diego's that live there :D )! The muckland made it famous for that and Rapasadi Onions is still here. Also known for the Erie Canal I suppose. Actually, just found a pretty interesting link...

Canastota History

Durhamville, where I am now (about 10 mins away) isn't known for anything that I know of....but the canal runs through it too. OH...the Oneida Indian TurningStone Casino (ie. property tax inflator) is only a few miles away.

I work in Syracuse, The Salt City. Known for SU basketball and.....um.....oh! the NY State Fair and....um......the suposed future home of Destiny USA
