Hi all,

I'm not being funny here but could someone describe a real "redneck". Have seen enough jokes on the forum which leave little to the imagination as regards some of the behavioural antics. Are so called rednecks spread throughout the population?

In South Africa the term rooineck (redneck in Dutch) was given as a derogatory term for all those who originated from England as within two days they had they had a blistered cherry red neck from the African sun. Thus they were easily identified as the "enemy". The term is used to a lesser extent nowadays, mainly by those more towards the right fringe.

Cheers
Andrew

Re: What is a REDNECK ?

Origins were from the 60's hippy culture. A label of "redneck" back then was given to the beer-drinking, coarse-talking,hawkish, hard-working guy with the pot belly, who looked down his nose at the hippies who didn't werk. The name refers to the neck sunburnt from werking with a tee shirt on. The term was also adopted by the people who werk with thier brains in office buildings, towards anyone who werk with thier backs outside (like the gardner, roofer, road werker ect).

Naturally, those who had the red necks, took this dirogatory label as a compliment, and still do.
The term has therefore spread into the modern vocabulary to include "poor white trailer trash", found predominently in the southern states. These people are known for having junk in thier yards, talking with a southern accent, a rebel flag hanging in the window---you know the stereotype....
The word invokes anger and hatered as well as derscribing that anger and hatered. It insinuates disgust, and in others, pride at the same time!
It all depends on who is the labeler, and who is the "labelee".

Re: What is a REDNECK ?

kinda how it started here. most farmers and farm workers keep a sunburned neck. mostly these people are looked down upon by the wealthier middle class that never broke a nail.
now it mainly refers to people like me that have more boats and motors in the front yard than in the back.
at least my washer and dryer are not on the front porch, yet :) . however I do have a 15cu ft upright freezer on it :) :) .
whers my sign :)
and no, none of my project cars sit on flats :)

Re: What is a REDNECK ?

well I am lucky
my house is 400 ft back in the woods from the road. the road was just paved in 98.
so if you see my junk its cause your trespassing anyway and subject to be shot while an errant hunter thought you was a deer :) . but I am thinking of moving my washer and dryer tothe covered porch and converting the laundry room to a parts/special tools room :) garage is to full:)
I think there is about 30-35 motors and 8or 9 boats 4 or 5 cars and a horse with a few cats hanging about.
if this place sells I will dig a big hole and bury it :) :)

Re: What is a REDNECK ?

In the 1630s, during the crises that culminated in the English Civil War,
the Presbyterians of Scotland dissented from both the mainstream Anglican
view, as well as that of the rising "Puritans." In their view, the
Anglicans were "Catholics-minus-the-Pope," while the Puritans were
half-crazed utopian dim-wits who wanted to create a "shining city on the
hill" so that they could rule the City. In declarations issued in 1638 and
1641, these Lowland Scots issued so-called "Covenants," whereby they
declared that they would not accept the Anglican form of Church govt (headed
by the King), but would also not accept the Puritans' theological/political
view. "Covenanters" signed their oaths in their own blood, and many wore
red pieces of cloth or stiff, red collars to signify their identity as dissenters (thus "Red-Necks"). After the English Civil War, and then again after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, these Scots were forced to emigrate to America, and they largely settled in the South. By the time of the AMERICAN Civil War, the term was used to describe white Southerners of all theological stripes. Interestingly, most of the English-surnamed people of the NORTH were descended from PURITANS!

You'll note that "work" is foul language , and this is a family site. :)
