Sea of Cortez

Recently went to Lake Shasta didn't like it. On an indirect route home I passed by Whiskeytown Lake and that looked better to me.

I live in Fresno, almost the geographical center of California,...20 minutes away is Lake Millerton, I actually live on the river, down from the dam, (San Joaquin river),we keep the pontoon boat there in the slip, and go fishing there occasionally,( stripers, small mouth bass, catfish) 45 minutes away are Eastman Lake, (trophy bass), and Hensley Lake, (bass and trout). The river is full of what we call squaw fish, someone told me they are related to the northern pike? I have never caught one!

I have learned that it is time on the water and not the speed you travel, nor the size of the water you travel on.

For a landlocked fellow with the fortune to travel the Mississippi River, many of it's tributaries, lakes from South Texas to Northern Iowa, a bit of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, for me it is just the pleasure of being on the water. Many times I have been alone. Since I have had the great fortune of marrying my soulmate and fellow boat enthusiast, we have had a good deal of fun on the smaller bodies of water. One of the most pleasureable, is a cooling pond for a local power plant. It is less than 100 acres, yet more than a mile long. Our primary boat is a displacement craft that we have fun giving rides to all who want to, as it take around thirty minutes to make a complete swing around the small lake. The smiles and good feeling of not only the passengers, but the mate and captian make the day worth living.

The faster the craft, the smaller any body of water seems. I miss the ability to canoe along the forgotten or otherwised underutilized streams, where I could go for days at a time without meeting anyone else. Now that I must rely on dead dinosaurs or wood to take me where I want, I am content to boat in any water that there is enough room between the keel and the bottom.

I agree with you "External Combustion" that it is the time on the water that is most pleasurable. Although, I do enjoy running WOT when I can. I do most of my boating out of Galveston, Texas. Mostly head out to the north jetty which extends about 3 1/2 miles into the Gulf for fishing. I get more pleasure watching the people I'm with catch fish than I do when I catch em. Last weekend my ex wife and I went out of Freeport and ran the intercostal. That was nice. Real pretty out there. Not much for fishing but at least I had great company. She's my best boating and fishing partner and hopefully will be my wife again soon. I absolutely love it when she catches more than I do. That's weird isn't it.

Years ago I had a 17' canoe. My then 13 year old son and I used to canoe the small creeks feeding into Lake Conroe. There was one creek, real pretty too, that we went up. Got in there so far that we couldn't turn the canoe around. We had to turn ourselves around in the canoe to paddle back out.

Boating sure makes for fond memories doesn't it.

Y'all be safe out there.

Well - since my backyard is Lake Lewisville (Texas), its my main lake. I plan to get out onto Lake Grapevine, Lake Texoma and probably Ray Roberts (all are in N.Tex).

Large Lake category kind of misleading. OK to have that category, but should have a another large lake category too because the great lakes are more like oceans.

In any case I checked off Large lakes and I trailer to the various lakes and Rivers in my region like:

Lake Champlain (132 miles, runs between NY an VT).

Also go to Lake George (a 34 mile "pristine" lake nestled in the Adirondack mountains)

And the Hudson River (runs from NYC North to Lake Champlain).

Also the Mohawk River (the old NY canal barge system, runs from Albany NY to Buffalo NY).

I have not been in the Thousand Islands area of the St Lawrence Seaway in 20 years. Love that area. Will definitely get up there next year. Also did not get a chance to hit a few of the Finger Lakes in Western NY yet. Will do next season.

Did not do too much fishing this year, very warm summer. Did mostly cruising around. Water was 78 degrees near surface on most of the lakes I was on. Now that's it's cooling off will probably start to do some more fishing.

Upstate NY sure has some mighty fine bodies of water for recreational boating :)

Lake Wallenpaupak, Pa. not really a small lake at about 6 miles long, a very popular spot for people usually up to 50miles away, This includes visitors from parts of NY, and NJ.

Re: What body of water do you boat in?

Oh ya, one more lake to add . . . anyone know what Greenwood Lake was recently famous for . . . take your time . . . times up!

If you said the Lake from the first episode of the Sopranos last season where Tony and Carmella went for vacation at his Sister Janice and Brother in law Bobby's summer house you'd be right :)

A few weeks ago the winds in Albany and North were predicted to be 20-25 mph. Yet when I checked out South of us it said only said 5mph. One of the things I like about of trailering, you can follow where the good weather.

So we took off for the two hour drive to Greenwood Lake which lies on the NY and NJ line. This is a beautiful lake in the 9 mile in size range. Surrounded by mountains on all sides. Many marinas to launch a boat from ($15 on weekends, $10 weekdays). Probably 4 or 5 restaurants that you can pull up on the boat for lunch, cocktails or dinner.

Had a good time cruising around the whole lake in search of spotting the house they filmed that episode. Just watched the repeat episode last night again to see if we had the right one.

Funny how they filmed the scenes at this lake yet passed it off as them being at a lake in the Northern Adirondack mountains an hour's drive from Montreal Quebec.

Re: What body of water do you boat in?

Most of my big lake boating is done at Lake Powell. 165 miles from inlet to the dam, with dozens and dozens of canyons off the main channel. Some of the canyons alone are almost fifty miles long with fingers off the main canyon. They say there is over 2000 miles of shore line at Powell and in some spots my depth guage which reads to 999' just goes blank???? Temps in summer average 100+ deg its really heaven. Fishing is awesome no limit on the stripers some of which average 10 pounds and up (lake record striper was 47 pounds) We got into a good mess of them a few months back and I couldn't hardly pick up the stringer(1 of three) Lots of house boats on the lake sometimes we will take a week and just drive to the dam and back. Which takes all of a week in a house boat. Love it there..
