Yea, the water comes out almost boiling from the nuclear plant after running through a heat exchanger to cool it and flows about 1/2 mile and then into the lake. Depending on the temperature out, you either stay right by the outlet or get as far away as possible! However the lake closes October 10th for the season. :(

I am not bragging but I skied Thursday with just a 1mm neoprene top. Air temp 75 F water temp ??. I only got a little chill for 30 sec when I first got in. It was a nice day for skiing, no other boats on the water.

OK, this is my last post in this thread. Perfect conditions but like when I posted about the "usual" warm weather here in SE Texas, my post about going out today jinxed me. Nobody else can go to the lake today. :-(

Re: Wetsuit season begins tommorrow

I got out Saturday without a wetsuit again. Last Saturday I found the slalom course in the area. In fact, we have a ski club that I plan to join. Anyway, I could only get 3 buoys but thought it was because I had the big ole HO Magnum ski. This Saturday I tried with two competition skis and still couldn't get but 3 buoys. I guess I cannot deny my age :(

At least I am progressing back. I found the course and make 11 passes through this summer, as well a got a lot more time on a slalom ski. I can't wait for spring!

Last time we skied was Sept 15th. It was 20 deg air temp (68F) and about 17 water temp (62F). We were wearing 2mm shorty wet suits which was fine. It was a bit chilly since it was overcast as well. Given that the average daily temperature here has been in the high teens since then, i'm beginning to think my season might be over. :(

sickwilly, what speed do you go through the course on the Magnum? I'm guessing you slow it down a bit!

Re: Wetsuit season begins tommorrow

I had her pull me through around 30 on the Magnum two weeks ago. First we spent several times just having her drive through -- new to towing the last couple of year and I am in an IO. I thought is was enough to just try to have her hold the speed at 30.

This weekend we went back and I have a 67 or 68 HO VTX that a neighbor abandoned and a 67 inch Kidder KS graphite. I started both at 30 mph, 15 off. I then had her back down to 28. I really was not doing so hot. 3 buoys max.

However, when I used to run the course, I was 165-170 and ran on an old 65 inch EP GX3 Turboglass, now I am 192 and have basically 67 inch skis. I have since looked at the sizing charts, and both are probably too short till I can get the speed back up closer to 36 I guess?

I think I will have to start earlier and play around with the Kidder more, as it really did not feel good -- lots of spray, etc, but I did seem to pull strongest on it. I think that is probably the ski to start trying to dial in and get used too, or look for another over the off season -- maybe a 68 inch Concept or similar. Then again, I seemed to have the most fun on the Magnum (its the older more traditional shaped Magnum, not the newer V-hull one).

Either way, it was damn good to at least be trying. Come spring I am going to join the ski club. Hopefully they won't mine some old guy with an IO handing around -- heck maybe I can get a pull for some gas money behind a real ski boat.

I'd try upping the speed a bit and I'll bet it gets easier. Hard to believe that you are not sinking on the turns at those speeds.

I haven't tried a wide-ride ski in the course. There is an INTleague with 30 mph wide ski division that sounds fun.

I get so used to free skiing at 34.2 or 35 mph that I feel like I sink at 32 mph in the course. So prefer to ski faster even though nearly all coaching would say slow it down to work on fundamentals.

90-94? So does the water boil in the summer?
Just got back from going out today. I didn't have a temp gauge with me, but using my very good sense of water temperature guessing, it was over 90 degrees and lower then 100, my rough guess would be 94 or 95. I wish I had a temperature gauge to take a pic of. Air temp was 70 degrees. And I do have a hot tub and a pool, so I know what temperature water feels like what. It felt like a cool hot tub or a very warm pool.

Gag. I could not stand water temps that high. What part of the world is that?

A little more warmth would be fine. Minnetonka is starting to feel cold. Air temp was nice but the water is starting to feel a bit icy. Only 3-4 weeks left until the boat gets parked for the year.

Was out Saturday morning for a couple of sets and was glad I wore my drysuit. One of the guys wore his drysuit, but did remove it and skied one set in his barefoot suit. He said it was "refreshing".

I'll have the boat out at least a few more time before I usually store it around deer season.

I footed a couple of times from step-off late October last year. Following some ski runs my feet had gotten cold and a bit numb, and wiped out when I couldn't quite feel where water was breaking. Mid 40s water.

We call that ice block syndrome skibrain. Kinda hard to ski with ice blocks for feet. :)

We always keep a cooler of hot water in the boat once the water gets so cold that ice block feet could be an issue. Soak in the "hot tub" as we call it, both before and after your runs and be sure to quit your set before ice block syndrome happens.
