Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

Today it was raining cats and dogs so it was a perfect day to check the boat again.

First, the outdrive. What a beauty, isn't it?

Oil looks a bit creamy.

Off you go. The other nut wouldn't unscrew, so I had to remove the entire shaft. I was hoping the shaft doesn't support some crucial parts inside the drive as the service manual didn't have any good advice on doing this.

Let's take a look inside. Doesn't look very bad?

Alternator, marine or not? Can't tell from this angle.

Letters worn off, but I can see "MARINE SAE"

Both heads pulled now. I guess it's a good thing I did - my missing fogging oil can nozzle pipe was inside cylinder nr 8.

Any final determination on your compression issue? That OD fluid does not look the world's worst. How old is it?

No final determination yet, but I'll place my bets on stuck valve. I can't see much slack with the piston and the head seems ok as well. I'll get both heads checked at a machine shop, so that might reveal something. OD oil was changed last spring, when the outdrive was overhauled by a mechanic. The tilt shaft nuts are quite bad, and the shop manual told me to get rid of the outdrive mounting nuts. The thread seems to be quite fine, I wonder what kind of nuts are required.

Ayuh,.... Replace the tilt ram shaft, 'n it's nuts,...

I rarely replace the drive nuts, unless there's Obvious damage,....

Both sets of nuts are chrome plated brass, fine threads,...
The tilt shaft is 3/8", the drive nuts are 7/16"...

Don't use SSteel, even if ya can find 'em in fine thread, as they'll gall, 'n ruin All the threads,...

Thanks, Bondo. I'll look for the correct type of nuts. Is there a reason to change the shaft? Shaft seems ok and threads are ok now that I removed the other nut as well.

Ayuh,... If the threads are Ok, reuse it,....

So today I compared the Mercruiser intake I acquired to the old edelbrock performer intake. I realized the carburetor mount bolts are located differently. The holley, which uses the outer bolt holes on the edelbrock intake, won't fit the merc intake. Does the Edelbrock 650 cfm use the same mounting bolt configuration as Holley? For what kind of carb is the merc intake designed for? Are there any converters available?

the Merc carb is a GM carb and designe for the spreadbore quadrajet.

there are adapters. they are 1" thick, or 2" thick. the thicker the better for flow. you will need to remake your steel fuel line between the pump and the carb. if using an adapter.

you could simply line the water passages of your aluminum intake with enecon epoxy. its costly, however it works well enough for the navy to repair heat exchangers on navy vessels out at sea.

Ayuh,.... Aren't the Inner stud holes on the Edlebrock the Same as the stud holes on the Merc manifold,..??

The Merc manifold is a spread-bore plenum, with a Square-bore stud pattern,...
The Edlebrock Carb will drop right onto the studs,...

The Outer stud pattern on the Edlebrock intake is the spread-bore pattern,...
The Inner stud pattern oughta be the Square-bore pattern,...

'n they should be studs, washers, 'n nuts,...... not bolts,.... ;)

The outdrive actually looks OK but there could be water in the gear oil. It needs to be pressure tested. Was there any water or gear oil in the bellows? The rod that retains the trim rams needs to be really well greased and you can tap it back in carefully with a block of wood to protect the threads. I've never replaced thoseounting nuts, I use non hardening gasket sealer on em and the studs. Keeps em from seizing in salt water. Alt looks like it still has the original OMC grey paint on it.

Thanks for the replies. The outdrive has been repainted, so it is not original colour. Inner stud holes on the edelbrock intake are the same as the ones on merc intake. If I buy an adapter, is "open center" model sufficient, or is it required to have the carb barrels separated at the intake?

Ayuh,... You Shouldn't need an adapter, just the gaskets, studs, 'n nuts,...

Yeah, but I don't have a new carb yet, and switching too many components at the same is something I'm a bit afraid of. The adapters are quite cheap, so I'll at least test run the engine with the holley.

And no, there was no water in the bellows when i removed the drive.

Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

If you had no trouble taking the nuts off??? Reuse them.
The grease in the bellows means someone's been doing his job:)
The grease on the bellcrank is good.
But it can still corrode under the end and should be removed and cleaned and greased again.
The alternator, looks to be original.
The tilt shaft is used again, nuts too.
The drive oil,it looks well used.Like Lou suggested ,pressure test.
Make sure it's filled the right way.
