You have to know what you are doing when using kits like that. If you bring in advance too early, you can totally ruin a marine engine if you get too much advance when you are under load.

agreed. I wouldnt use the kit on a marine engine. I also would not use the HEI on a marine engine unless it was one of the DUI units

Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

Could I please get a little help with selecting a gasket kit. I browsed local sellers and was terrified by gasket prices. Around ~200-300€ for a basic set with heads, intake & exhaust gaskets. I found out that amazon has some Fel-Pro 17214 sets quite cheap, but that seems to be for 4.00" bore, is that some kind of nonstandard bore? I haven't seen bore diameter mentioned on other kits. Same as this. I guess I don't have a GEN+?

Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

By the way, I contacted GM for information about this engine. That was time well spent. Carol at GM kindly advised me that "I'm sorry, our databases do not contain any information regarding this type of question". Then she told me to contact local dealer, and I replied there are no authorized dealers for GM marine parts in Finland to my knowledge. I was then directed to the web pages containing contact information for the Korean made "Chevrolet" car dealers. It is highly unlikely I'll get help there, but I might test my luck. "Carol at GM told me you could help me! I'm a paying customer and refuse to leave. No need to call security."

Contact a Mercruiser or Volvo Penta dealer. If their power packages in Europe use GM engines they will know.

I consider it unlikely. I have a GM manufactured, probably a US imported "crate engine" (they sell these on ebay). All I know is, casting number 10243880 identification code 1Mxxx08G35 and I need to know what cam & bore diameter. Hasn't been any luck with those codes @ GM spare parts retailers.

Googling told me that 4.00" is std bore for 350. If I hear no objections, I'll order the Felpro 17214 by tomorrow.

As long as you know your motor hasnt been punched out. Have you looked into some of those easy efi throttle body kits, i know holly makes one and i think edelbrock to they just replace the carb. Not sure how well they would work for marine use, mabey give them a call and ask, i heard one doesnt need an o2 sensor, but they run around 3200usd. Marine carb would be your best bet.

That gasket kit you quoted from Summit looks like the one you need.

xjdriver, didn't know about those easy efi kits, but I think right now they're way out of my budget. My search for marine carb continues. Fortunately I'm not in a hurry, so I might hope for a good & cheap solution to come up, perhaps someone selling his or hers marine engine for parts around here (cheap). Found only one Merc four barrel carb in local market, used, but that was as expensive as ordering a new Edel 650 cfm overseas.

I ordered the Felpro gasket kit. As the boat is quite far away, I measured the the bore of old gasket. 4.055". To my understanding, this is a normal value of a gasket for 4" bore cylinders.

Browsed the local market some more. Even professionals are selling non marine carburetors for marine use, link (poorly google translated)., or am I totally missing something... Or is that a marine carb? If it is, that could be it. It just doesn't have the J shaped float chamber breather tubes, but then again, I found some marine carbs off ebay (link) that don't look like the ones on Boomyal's post. Ok, that's not holley, but I wonder what makes the edelbrock so safe for marine use

I guess I need electric choke. Those don't appear to have one.

Ayuh,.... The Edlebrock's don't have J-tubes, as it's a Completely differently designed carb,...

Still a Marine carb, but different design,...

They come with either the stove choke like in yer links, or with an electric choke,...

Yer 1st link is an Edlebrock, but the 750 cfm, Too big for yer motor,...
A stove choke, but there Are electric choke models out there,...

The 2nd link is the Edlebrock, 650 cfm, Also a stove choke,...

Will any 305 or 350 (4 bbl) cast iron intake manifold do? Those seem to be much easier to find (from 70s-80s cars) than manifolds from marine engines.

Ok. Is there no difference that matters, newer and older engines compared? This cast iron intake wouldn't be very expensive:

Ayuh,... Chevy intake bolt patterns are,...

From '55 to '86 are the same,....
from '86 to '95 the angle of the bolts are different, but in the same places,...
After '96, the Vortec pattern is used, 8 bolts, not 12...

Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

Are the intake manifolds from pre-85 and after 86 interchangeable, despite of different bolt angles? I also noticed that my Edelbrock alloy manifold has functional water channels near the distributor opening, but most manifolds I've been browsing, do not. Do I need 6 water channels, or is 4 sufficient?

Far as i know they can be 'made' to work but the bolt holes need to be elongated/drilled out on the newer manifolds... I have seen it done and work, and also fail terribly. i believe a few of the bolts go into the water jackets.. had a truck at the shop i work at somebody put a carb manifold on a newer fuelie motor, and it constantly leaked coolant into the engine. Drained about 10 liters of 'oil' out of it one day.. ya, not good.

Re: Went to check my boat, end up with a removed cylinder head

Found a used & rusty mercruiser 12 bolt manifold quite cheap. No idea of year, but i'll compare it to the existing alloy intake. If it doesn't fit, probably some machine shop that knows what to do can customize it for me, as I'll take it to a machine shop anyway to get the gasket surfaces reconditioned.
