Hi Everyone,
1986 Bayliner 2560 Volvo Penta 5.7 temp gauge not working.
  • Pulled temp sender wire and grounded it
  • Gauge spiked to max temp
  • Replaced temp sender (Teflon tape on top 1/3 of threads)
  • Gauge still doesn't work.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ayuh,..... Tape can isolate the sender from ground, ya gotta use paste,.....
'n make sure the housing has a good solid ground,....

Also you'll need to make sure the temp is actually rising/getting up to temperature... A stuck open thermostat from engine cold can keep the temp from reaching a point that it won't read on the gauge...Say right around 100 degrees may not move the needle much/any.

Also depending on T/housing design, Worn out, damaged, missing, installed wrong inner gaskets/O_Rings could cause an affect such as this too.

verify the temp with a heat gun. as FT stated, the T-stat may have failed open. Also, as Bondo pointed out. tape may be preventing the sender from making ground

Quick check of ground by cleaning an area of the body of the temp sender and a wire from cleaned area to a known good ground. 2 min job to confirm.

Ran 20+ minutes yesterday and never got over 92 degrees. I will replace the thermostat this weekend.
