Let me butt in. <br />You start out with 50/1 ratio. <br />At low speed it runs as low as roughly 25/1 Lower speed more oil is req'd.<br />At high speed less oil as much as 100/1 ratio.<br /> That is why if you troll for a long period of time, and then you punch it you may see smoke, from the oil build up now burning.off.<br /> that's the nature of the beast. I always go WOT at a point on the way home to the dock, just to blow the engine out.

The VRO from OMC was changed to 50/1 all rpms,all loads sometime around 1989.

I think you guys got it backwards. At idle, the engine needs very little lubrication. The bearing loads are low, the combustion chamber temperature is low, and friction is low. In fact, during testing, outboards will idle for over an hour without any oil in the gas. As soon as power (heat) is applied, the motor will stick due to lack of lubrication to the heavily loaded parts.
