Re: TWO STROKE OIL

The Wal Mart oil is packaged by Pennzoil (soon to change) but is not the same as Pennzoil TCW3. We use the Pennzoil Blend (partial synthetic) based on years of testing and rebuilding outboards. It is only 9.50 a gallon.

Good luck!

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

In regards to Pursuit's earlier post. I went to the NMMA site and had a look at the 2002 approved list of TC-W3. I noticed that the only OEM oil on the list is Suzuki, where is Mercury, Evinrude, Yamaha etc. How about the other oils discussed here on this thread? Pennzoil, Super tech, Exxon etc. Exactly how does the certification program work? Is there a renewal required each year, additional testing... Anyone with more info, please chime in.

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

grandx -- I wondered the same thing. You will also see that a few "REG.COs." make different oil names. So I went a little further and went to the Havoline site ChevronTexaco, and pulled down an 8 pg. data sheet.I then went to Pennzoil, and that site mentioned the oil meets the warranty of 8 major OB engine companies.
I think we should now be concerned with
"What OIL not to use"

Don't right off OEM brand oils just because they are not listed..

keep in mind that they are usually not targeting the oil for general purpose usage.. they are selling it to be used with their own motors.. why do they need approval to sell it for their own motors?

I've not heard anyone say OMC ficht oil is bad.. in fact quiet the opposite..

If a manufacturer sells an oil they recommend for their own equipment, its a waste of money for them to get it approved with all the others and doesn't really serve any purpose..

rgds

Frank

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

That's not the point! The real question is"Can you use any oil if it states it is TC-W3"?
The answer is NO, unless you can prove that it meets the NMMA standards!
There are oils that can screw up the injectors, carbs, plugs, etc.
Sure i'll accept,OMC.MERC,SUZ,YAMI, etc.
But do you want to pay double + the price, when others will do the same task?

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

Many of the OEM oils were on the old NMMA list, now they are not on the 2002 list. The question is, What is the certification process? Once approved always approved? or must all continue to test and certify?

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

I just bought my season supply of Havalone, each jug has a NMMA certification sticker on it, some others I saw at the store simply state "TC-W3"
$9.00/Gal.
I work every day in Certified equip. and the rule in the Airfield Program is "You must be re-tested every 5 years in order to be certified, If not the company name comes off the list.

Re: TWO STROKE OIL

My brand new (2001) 40HP Johnson has a sticker that simply states to use NMMA approved TC-W3 oil.

Although I'm using the OMC brand ($16.75 for 6 pints)for break-in, the Walmart brand for $ 5.65/gal is looking mighty tempting.

Besides, If I burn it up, I can always get that 4 stroke Yammy!!

Isn't life great when we actually have the time to debate the merits of 2-stoke oil!

Get out on the water, everyone!
