Re: Transom Materials?

Here are some pics of the nidabond pour in the ranger. This was my first time working with the stuff. I had sealed all the holes with duct tape (not a good idea.) and I had a leak in the bilge. I lost about 2 gallons in the bilge of the boat. So this said, make sure to take your time and do all the prep work right.

The pour we did yesterday went much, much better. No leaks and we took our time with the prep work.

anyway, here are the pics.

Re: Transom Materials?

The pictures Isaacm1986 is exactly what my pour was like. I did the pour alone and did not take detailed pictures like Isaacm1986 posted. Brilliant idea with the wooden funnel! I used a traffic safety cone !
Very important make sure you seal every little hole not with tape but resin, this stuff sets up very very hot !

Here I am cutting down to a 20" !

Great pictures! You did a great job with the outer skin.

It looks like the 2 products are very alike in how they are prepped and poured.

Hey Mymack66, it looks like you were able to pour up the sides. did you build a dam and pour from the very top of your cutout? I was wondering about that.

Re: Transom Materials?

I was thinking about seacast but maybe ill try nidabond...I no longer have and inner skin for my transom it was so far gone....I did leave a small lip around teh edge so I could create false skin with plywood and pour some product in there......I would use plywood but my transon is not flat and has a few angled areas where the motor mounts and teh problem in that where the motor mounts in like 1 1/2" and top and up to 2" at bottow and i'm have neither the skill or know how to cut plywood like that!

my other option would be to just nida/seacast the motor area and use wood in front and for the rest on the transom but i'm not sure how stong that would be.

Yes I did seal it on top and up the sides using plywood, this allowed me to insert the cone funnel all the to the rub rail level and poured from starboard side only it flowed across and up flawlessly. After mixing it up its fair to say the thickness was almost thin as gear oil, this is why I stress plugging every hole. You don't want air pockets any where and as its curing it gets very hot and the fumes is priceless so stay the hell away from it :)
The Arjay stuck to the ply like it was welded on I was forced to use the angle grinder to remove all traces of it.
Yes, NadaCore and Arjay is alike, Seacast is not its much thicker and does NOT flow as good, I will say however base on glassing experience, Seacast in my opinion appears to be even stronger because of the fiber strand required to me mixed in ?
Take your time remember the actual pour is quick its the preparation you MUST pay attention to, once you add the catalyst there is no turning back or stopping.
Yea my X was pissed at me for not answering the phone whilst I was in the middle of the pour :)
Drilling into the transom today to add toys is worry free no wood to rot !

Re: Transom Materials?

I would love to see some pictures of the arjay pour. I am curious how it compares to the Nida-bond.

I know I am a little late for this post, but it may help some later on. Arjay's product#6011 is Nida-bond, just labeled differently for Nida-Core distribution. I got this info in a Email from Arjay.

Re: Transom Materials?

Does anyone know the weight of Nidabond and Seacast when hard. 12x12x3/4 or 1 1/2.

I'm pretty sure I saw that plywood prepped for transoms was 2.8lbs for a 12x12x3/4, West Marine site I think.

Also, I have read may posts related to a little transom flex being a good thing. Is the Nida or Cast have any flex or is it rigid. Can this hurt the structure of the hull?

It seems strange that in this age there are only 2 options for a transom replacement - wood or Nida/Cast. Is there nothing else?

Re: Transom Materials?

There are LOTS of other synthetic materials to choose from, BUT your probably would NOT want to pay for them. Not sure what your objection is to using wood. If you use the proper prep methods and quality resin and glass it will last 40 + years. Why is that NOT good enuf for your efforts?

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Transom Materials?

I deal with a company that supplies science tables, one of the products used is Phenolic Resin Tops, trade name Trespa, these are a grade below epoxy resin. Could you not shape this to size and PB it in place, Yes cost more than wood, about 1/2 of Nida, No rot, very stable material. The company could CNC it to my required shape.

My glass work is pretty ugly, why not drop in a pre cut waterproof panel?
