Just replaced the rotted portion of my transom and now I need to cap it off. My original cap is not reusable so I'm looking for an alternative method without having to fiberglass it from scratch.

Re: transom cap

Uhmmm, sooo... did you just remove the rotted wood and slide in some new plywood as best you could? Are those just empty gaps along the sides? What's all the Red Goop on top? A little explanation of how this repair was done would be appreciatd. The only way I know to cap it off is with fiberglass or possibly fabrcate an aluminum cap from some aluminum channel but...from what I see in the pic, I don't think you're ready for that just quit yet.

Re: transom cap

The goop is a product called l&l resin from rot doctor, the empty gaps on the sides were there when I removed the cap. Didn't seem like anything was ever there. I removed the rotted wood as deep as it went and treated the rest when cpes. Then I cut some plywood to fit and filled around it with that l&l resin.

Re: transom cap

Well, it's your boat and you can do as you see fit but...The transom is one of the most important structural elements of the boat, and it needs to be One Piece and very strong. IMHO (and not trying to bust your chops) the method you've described and illustrated is not sufficient to support the motor you'll be hanging on the boat. It appears to be some sort of bass/fishing boat. We here on the forum are always concerned with doing things in a safe and correct way. This appears to be neither. But as I stated, It's your boat and we can only offer our advice. You might want to search the forum and see what others have done with very similar boats as yours. There' a LOT of them.

Re: transom cap

I hate to say you need to redo it again but man i really think you need to redo it again. Replacing that section of cap is easy though but in order to do a proper repair the cap needs to be cut off the entire back end. You would have been better off with Seacast with the way that you have done this. Those gaps on the sides are not supposed to be there and are now the weak point of the transom it will introduce flex with any movement of the motor,(bouncing on the highway, underpower, reversing), which will cause cracks and eventually failure. What your motor mounts to will be strong but what holds that is not.
