No hype - no question - just an interesting Tourag (and others) related article. This thread contains a great deal of comment about the capabilities and virtues of the Tourag. Nice as it is, it is apparently not the most trouble-free vehicle on the planet according to this owner survey. Perhaps those who may be thinking about plunking down their kids college money on one might be interested in reading about it.

Yep not great on reliablity. A lot and I mean a lot of bell and whistles. My first was a lemon. The second just got traded in because of the bad experience with the first and the cost.

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

There's really never a need to worry about engine capacity for towing, the appropriate gear ratio would allow a 5 HP motor to pull a 10,000# rig, it's braking capacity that matters, and that's what the towing capacity label is based on. Everyone hooks up an over capacity load, drives around a little and says..."it pulls fine, plenty of power". But it won't stop at 40, 50, 60 or more miles per hour in an expected way.

Mr Bill - HP and torque are definite factors in towing. True, my 11 HP tractor tows my near 3000 pound boat -- at about 2 mph. True - braking is a factor but try pulling 10,000 pounds with too small an engine or to low (numerically) rear axle ratio and you have a tow vehicle that will be terribly ineffective and won't last, besides being a hazard on the road as it won't be able to climb hills or maintain freeway speeds. As they say -- "there is no substitute for cubic inches". Torque gets you going and its horsepower that maintains speed.

VW , as sad as it may be, seems to have lost its way , it use to be the peoples car, now it seems they get lost in making things that the common man cannot afford or has no reason to own. The New Bug is a good exhample. I have owned a 1970 bug and a 2001. The days of simplicity are gone the new beatle has so many gizmo's and gadgets it is a bit overweight. This is not to say that I dont like the way it drives, they feel very solid. All the rumors of the silly things that VW is doing with their power plants,W12 ? Sure is a long way from the Flat 4 of long lost days.<br />Many have said that VW's towing capacity seems a bit much, I would agree with that , but I also feel old habits die hard , many of us feel that you can only hook up a trailer to a V8 big three pickup. Those days are gone too. I am in the begining of setting up my Durango to toe a camper and came across a bit of interesting information. Many of the new rear independent suspension SUV's require a sway control. The independent suspension allows the rear of the truck to roll slightly allowing the trailer to sway.

Ahhh -- ain't technology great. We grumble about it because those of us who like to fix our own stuff seem to constantly need new tools to work on this new technology. However, you must agree that great strides have been made.

"VW , as sad as it may be, seems to have lost its way"<br /><br />Thats why the only VWs I like anymore are my Corrado SLC and my 16v GLI.

Bondo, let's not forget the articulation of the tractor/trailer combo. Ask any camper hauler and if the've towed a 5th wheel and a ball hitch, they'll attest to the difference. The 5th wheel stabilizes the load so much better than the ball-hitch. It's simple physics.<br /><br />And I wholeheartedly agree...The tail WILL wag the dog. <br />Categorically I hate all European cars (VW, Porsche, Audi, M-B, BMW, etc.) But, the Toureg is a nice looking vehicle. Though I'd NEVER own one. For many more reasons than we have time to consider.
