Re: Touareg Towing Pic

Something's wrong of the pic with the travel trailer. See how far away from the vehicle the head for the weight dist hitch is? All I've seen sit right up next to the rear bumper...or is this something new?
No this is nothing new. I have a hitch set up like this.
But I have to agree with bondo I can see an accident
waiting to happen.

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

I just checked the VW site and the GVWR is indeed 6496# which is not what the vehicle weighs. This means the combination of vehicle weight, occupants, cargo and tongue weight of a trailer cannot exceed 6496#. That rating is usually derived from tire load ratings and springs.

Much cheaper? I looked up the specs and built out one with as many options as a touareg. It came out to be $39700. Thats 5k less than a v-8 Touareg with 1k more towing capacity. Plus a few more otions GMC doesn't even offer. So in my opinion I wouldn't say it's cheaper it just doesn't have as many bells and whistles and doesn't tow as much.

Model: 2005 Envoy XUV (Select New Model):

Selected Type: 4WD (Select New Type):

Style:
Selected Style: SLT 1SC (Select New Style):

Autotrac 4x4 system (4x4 models only)

Dual-function tailgate featuring a drop or swing gate with power window

Intermittent windshield wipers with pulse washers

Power windows with driver's Express-Down feature

Power-sliding rear roof

Vortec 4200 inline six-cylinder engine with 275 hp

Colors (Modify):
Exterior: Liquid Silver Metallic

Interior: Light Gray Leather Seating Surfaces

Options & Packages (Modify):

Air bags, side head curtain, first and second row $ 495.00

Cruise control, electronic with set and resume speed, includes telltale in instrument panel cluster NO CHARGE

Defogger, rear-window, electric NO CHARGE

Delete xm satellite radio $ -325.00

Differential, locking, heavy-duty, rear NO CHARGE

Engine, Vortec 5300 V8 SFI, with DoD (Displacement on Demand) (300 HP [224 kW] @ 5200 rpm, 330 lb. ft. A question I couldn't find an answer to. Does the Envoy have low range?

Just dial 911 when the accident occurs... we will cut you out of the vehicle, but those side curtain airbags could pose a problem...

The tail will wag the dog. It's an accident waiting to happen. It isn't about hp...it's the LACK of wheelbase and suspension that are going to put you in a ditch or worse. Brakes on the trailer help but are NO cigar.

As for the AWD question, the Touareg does have low range as well as center and rear locking diffs.

As for the brakes, six piston Brembo brakes are standard equipment with rather large rotors. Minimum wheel size is 17" because smaller wheels will not fit over the rotors. The braking is very precise, fast and smooth... trailer or no trailer.

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

before everyone bashes it because its a VW, it is one of the most capable suvs out there now. NON-USA markets get a nearly 550ft/lb V10 diesel version also.

however, it is an suv, and is limited in towing by its wheelbase, as stated above. It can do it, just how safe? I hate suvs, but wouldn't mind a touareg

I just passed one on the highway today. I was surprised how big they are. I thought they were small, but that is not the case.

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

The right tool for the right job
If I'm looking for a family hauler, that can still tow a respectable amount, most manufacturers have an SUV that will fit the bill.
If I'm looking for a vehicle that will tow, yet still haul a family, you really have to look at a 4-door pickup.

This isn't meant to be an apples-apples comparison, but the #'s are important.
•
• Curb Weight - VW 5086#, F150 5577#, GMC 2500HD 5738#
• Height - VW 68", F150 76", GMC 76"
• Length - VW 187", F150 224", GMC 256"
• Width - VW 76", F150 79", GMC 80"
• Wheelbase - VW 112", F150 139", GMC 167"
• HP - VW 240, F150 300, GMC 330
• MSRP - VW $37,140, F150 $34,605, GMC $33,480
• EPA - VW 20 mpg, F150 18 mpg, GMC 16 mpg
• MAX BRAKED TRAILER - VW 7716 , F150 8,200, GMC 8,200

Now if you want to go towing a long boat/trailer with something that has a 9'4" wheelbase, just let me know so I'm not in the area when you do. I'd rather haul that with something a third larger (the GMC wheelbase is 13'11").

Any of the above would have no problems pulling my 18' aluminum Starcraft, and for that I'd choose the VW (actually, I chose the Honda Pilot, but that's for another discussion).

trollhole once said
But it's kind of like a swiss army knife it has everything you need.
I think it's more like it has a little bit of everything you need

Swiss army knifes (or Leatherman tools) are great for certain things, but try either to field-dress a deer, or loosen a rusted screw, or cut some barb-wire, and you'll be wishing you had the right tool for the right job

Numbers are important. Curb weight of a V-8 touareg is 5,300 lbs and HP is 310. Torque is 302lbs. Though the price will go up. When you look at a loaded f15 and a loaded GMC so does there price.

Also suspension make a difference touareg has Front double wishbone independent steel spring suspension Optional 4-Corner adjustable air suspension with six adjustable ride heights and Continuous Damping Control - three adjustable damping settings. And the rear Rear four link independent steel spring suspension Optional 4-Corner adjustable air suspension with six adjustable ride heights and Continuous Damping Control - three adjustable damping settings.

Brakes are also a consideration.

Power assisted front vented disc brakes (330 mm X 32 mm), rear vented disc brakes (330 mm X 28 mm) with 6 piston brembos on the front and fours on the rear. The only specs I could find on the other was that they have brakes and have anti lock. The only thing I could find comparable was on an excursion and the were single piston calipers and were still smaller.

and of course traction.
Traction Control
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
Anti-slip regulation (ASR) Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)
Engine Braking Assist (EBA)
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
Electronic Stabilization Program with brake assist (ESP)
Hill Descent Assist (HDA)
Hill Climb Assist (HCA) - engages only in low range gear
The two you mentioned only say they have limited slip diferentials.

and 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, Dynamic Shift Program (DSP), sport mode, and low range gear for getting you out of the boat ramp.

And no I don't work for them. I own one though and know what it is capable of doing. Not that I'm dumb enough to max it's towing capacity out. I think anyone who does that is just plain asking for it. It's not as small as you think and it tows as good or better than the vehicles you have descibed above. (I know I have towed with them) So I'm not just looking at it from just one direction. I know what a Touareg can do I'm not saying they are the perfect tow vehicle but they do a really good job at it as well as hauling you and you passengers with safety as well as comfort to and from the boat ramp and work site.

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

Ok I have owned 20 various VW's in years past .. bout time they made one that will tow. I had a rabbit truck , I pulled a tandum trailer, with a international cub farm tractor ( not the lawn mower) towed it 6 miles about a dozen times early on saterday mornings down country roads at 25-30 miles per hour. Yea it was scary and I will never do that again. That little truck was a tough bugger. JUST because you can doesnt mean you should. BTW I want one of the VR6's for my 1980 Scirocco. 175 hp in a car built with 70 .. Just because you can doesnt mean you should !

Re: Touareg Towing Pic

There is a pricing issue here. Although it might appear MSRP are within a couple thou of each other, most of the big three are offering up to 8K in rebates or special no/low interest rates on certain vehicles. I doubt VW is offering any incentives or if they do, nowhere near the big three. Just a dollars and cents (or is it sense) deal. I suspect that if the VW is used in the marginal towing situations we've seen in this series of posts, that suspension component repair and alignment costs would make a serious dent in the family budget. And I can't imagine what a transmission rebuild would cost. Nice vehicle to be sure though.

Happened to stumble onto this today in the auto news. This is just a small piece of the article.

Volkswagen's Touareg, for instance, had one of the worst results in the survey, with 48 problems reported per 100 vehicles. Porsche's Cayenne, which shares the same vehicle platform, had 41 problems per 100. BMW's X5 and DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV, the Mercedes E-Class sedan and Volkswagen's New Beetle also scored far below average in reliability.

See the entire article here: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...0050305/ts_latimes/subaruattopinqualitysurvey
