I bought an 83 Chris Craft 230 Scorpian w/260 merc (sn#6261027), out drive has a crack by the prop, from what I have read it was probably caused by corosion between the lock ring/bearing retainer and the case

I have preasure tested it and it held 30 psi for two days, as far as I can tell the drive is good except for the crack.

I was thinking about drilling the lock ring and using as pressure washer to remove as much crap as possible from inbetween the retainer and case, installing a new lock ring and welding up the crack, what do you folks think ?

Ayuh,..... Run it til she pukes, 'n then Replace it....

Corroded aluminum don't weld so well,... It tends to be porous, 'n leaks all by itself.....

That spanner nut is in there tighter than you think. Since the crack is away form the gear case LEAVE IT ALONE! You'll do more damage just trying to get it loose.

what about drilling a hole where the crack stops to keep it from cracking more? or would that be advised?
