Re: Tire Pump

Then you have never used a good one. The ViAir I bought was because we used to have to air up the 35's on my jeep from 5 psi to 30 psi after offroading. Less than 5 minutes a piece. Bringing a trailer tire up 5-10 psi takes seconds.
4 x 5 minutes is an eternity when you only have 30 minutes between sessions. A lot of the tournament guys like myself have gone from tank to co2 inflation.

Tournament what?

Powertanks are fine - folks use them in the offroad world too, they are just bulky and a poor choice for something you are going to try to keep in your truck.

Re: Tire Pump

I'm more interested in seeing the how the tires have failed? Most trailer tires are rated at 50psi cold, unless you went with an LT type with a 'E' rating or higher, then I think those are 65-70psi?

Snap a few pictures, tires can tell a great story, over-inflated, under-inflated, too much caster, too little caster, too much camber, too little camber, etc...

I also like the ARB compressors, When I used to 4x4 a lot, those were the stuff!

I don't remember if they are 55 or 65 LBS but I will be filling them to the max pressure from now on. Underinflated tires are going to set me back about $400 plus install.
If they were load range D they were 65. Load range C would be 50.

Re: Tire Pump

I had one of those HF 300 PSI Air pumps. $30 version of a Vaiair. It worked great till it fell out of the truck one day and broke.. Only thing that sucked was my old truck had a 155" wheelbase and I could not reach one of the rear tires

Surf fishing tournaments

I never thought of anything 7 x 24 as bulky. Easily fits under the back seat of the truck (Tahoe) along with all the "safety" equipment required to get a beach permit.

Bulky is 6-12' fishing rods in the roof rack and another 8 rods in the surf rack along with a 72 qt. bait cooler, a 92 qt. beverage cooler, 2- 5 gallon rigging buckets and a swing out bait table w/light. The inside of the truck is crammed with provisions, clothing and tackle for 2-3 guys to stay out on the beach 3 days at a time.

Re: Tire Pump

Problem is that the compressors that actually move some air attach with jumper cable style clamps to the battery - can't get enough current to run them through a lighter plug.
True but he had a $30 H/F job..... no big amps there

Though my little cordless ryobi gets the job done, my future (when I finally get a round toit ) holds a permanently mounted and wired viair comp w a 2 gallon tank, pressure switch, relay, air hose outlets under the hood. and in the back of the bed and direct connection to my air bags via an auto level valve w a link rod to the rear axle.

Re: Tire Pump

I use either a 400c or 440c viair compressor with 2 two gallon tanks on my frame rails. I can't remember which compressor I went with, it's the one of the two with the higher duty cycle.

I can run air tools within reason, but it really comes in handy when I run SAG for the bike events, guys say they could kiss me when they change a tube and struggle with a hand pump, and I pull up with onboard air. Also great for filling up air mattresses while camping on those events and the like.

Plus the train whistle..... OMG!

If you're just going to top them off a decent bicycle pump would work.

Re: Tire Pump

Q Industries manufactures the Masterflow and Superflow line of portable air compressors. I have five of them, one each in all the family vehicles. They are great compressors at very reasonable prices, and they don't have the pain-in-the-butt flip over valve connectors (that work sometimes work and sometimes not, and release as much air as you pump in while trying to take them off.... I know, this hasn't happened to anyone but me!). The hose connector just screws right on to the valve stem. There are lower amperage models that just plug in to a cigarette lighter and higher amperage/output models that clamp direct on to your battery terminals.

I have 4 Cyclone models (for auto tires) and 1 Tsunami which I got for higher pressures (truck and trailer tires). I've had very good luck and performance with these compressors. You can search the Masterflow/Superflow name and check out the deals. There's even a manufacturer refurbished site that has great prices. ViAir looks like they have similar products.

Re: Tire Pump

LOL...Try to bring a large 15" tire up 10lbs and you won't be saying that.

Actually, I have done that and its not too bad, though its better to make one of the kids do it ;).

+1, this will work just fine in the case of an emergency, plus it is compact and doesn't rely on any power source. Most people that think this is laughable assume that if it makes noise, it has to be more powerful than something that doesn't. In fact, i can pump a tire up much more quickly with the lowly bicycle pump than a 12v pump, especially the harbor freight job.

Re: Tire Pump

Bike tire pumps have no problem producing 65 PSI. Tires on my bike are at 120 PSI. Just takes a long time to get there and I have personal experience!
right but he said "faster than an electric..."

Admittedly tho I haven't touched a hand or foot pump for probably 20 years and they may have gotten better but I can remember pumping up a car tire a few times and it certainly didn't go faster than any 12v compressor I've ever used.

Oh yeah...for sure that. I had to add a few pounds to my truck tire once and all I had was my bike pump. I would have worn it out if I used it all the time for something like that,
