Tilt an trim issues

Hello everyone new here but have been reading for a while now its my turn to ask a question, i have a 115, 1993 mariner and when i tilt and trim it moves very slowly like if its straining either way, my mech said it might be something with the pivot about to cease up but if i turn that screw to open it i can lift it up manually with no prob, i have 2 new batt and a switch even on the both position it does it i have rewired the whole thing and even rebuilt the motor don't know what else to do, have any of you ever experience this or do you have any advice or anything i can check, thank you guys for making this such an informitive site.

the original plastic body 2w trim motor used on single ram systems of that era didn't really have enough torque for bigger motors. In mid 90's mercury went with a high amp 3w motor (aka black filler) and then later went with a bigger 2w motor that found a better balance between electrical amps and motor torque than either of previous. It was probably a mistake to have your old motor rebuilt in lieu of buying a replacement. The 92-95 2w motors have a real problem with spinning the lower bearing. They barely had enough to start with and a spun bearing makes them crawl. Before you run off and buy a new motor, check to make sure that all of your electrical connections are clean and tight. It only takes a little bit of corrosion to make the motor do what you describe.


posting pictures helps because there are at least four possible systems for your engine. I am blindly guessing at i think might, maybe, possibly ... could be ... the most likely, well maybe not THE most likely but at least not uncommon.

Thanks for all that info, the trim motor is the original i know the history of the motor it has 2 wires going in it which are power if i remember core tly are power the motor makes the negative and i rebuild it, is there a way of checking the voltage going in the motor and the bearing do they sell that and how can i check it or replace it, it used to tilt the motor up while under power and got progressively worse now this weekend it did'nt tilt and if i tried tilting it for too long while under power it would'nt work at all even in neutral then after a while it would work again, almost like something got to hot trying and had to cool down thanks for you're response, any other questions let me know

sure sounds like a spun bearing. is it noisy?

Not worth fixing. You'll pay mercury as much for the parts than you'll pay aftermarket for a new motor. Asian motors are cheaply built and not nearly as good as the original. However, they are still better than an incompletely rebuilt mercury.

Yeap that might be it just checked the motor directly to the batt which by the way i don't know what i was thinking whe i wrote the other post it has 2 wire but when you connect them to the batt 1 to pos 1 to neg it goes up flip the wires around it goes does, it goes down faster than it goes up.
