thunderbolt years

can someone tell me what years mercury made their motors with this thunderbolt ignition? Thanks in advance.

I had a '67 650 4 cylinder that was a thunderbolt ignition. Soooooo many different trigger/coil setups even within the thunderbolt margin. What exactly are you after?

I am looking at a 1985 mercury 115 and just want to stay clear of a thunderbolt.

Well my bud has an '86 115hp that most certainly is NOT a thunderbolt. If you have a serial # for me I could give you a definate answer.

P.S. just curious what is it that you don't like about the thunderbolt? I never had any trouble with mine, but I am not a big fan of distributor ignitions in outboards.

Gee, Thunderbolt is just a name, and it was used for different ign types over the years. The motor you are looking at has an Alternator Driven Ign (ADI), which was used up until the late 90s at least.
