Just put another lower unit on boat. Had the boat out approx. one hour and everything seemed to be running fine. Was at about half throttle and was going to bring it back down to idle and the throttle was very tough to get back to the idle position. Once it did get back engine quit and would not resart. Attempted to move throttle lever back and forth from forward to reverse and very tough to move. Any suggestion??? at a lose..

What are we working on, model number? Does the throttle work easy if you unhook the throttle cable from the engine?

Johnson 200 hp 1996. Never heard of the neutral safety switch, I will have to look that up. Didn't get a chance to work on it today, but I will try to unhook the cable and see what happen.

a motor is not meant to start if the switch is saying its in gear, just a safety feature,i have a 98 200hp so on that schematic its #98 or there could be one in the control box

Re: Throttle/Lower unit

also, did you try to shift the lower unit by hand when it was off the motor. theres a small rubber gasket where the rod goes into the unit that sometimes hardens
