The Imperial is also way overpriced.

There should be many good buys coming up as it is the beginning of the buyers season.

Stay away from Bayliners, anything with an OMC and Merc 470s

Bayliners get some bad press for two reason: 1.) there are a LOT of them out there because the brand was designed to be inexpensive, and 2.) Bay has had several years (through the 90's I would say) where they're quality was questionable.

My opinion: It takes lookin' at 'em. A well cared for Bayliner can be better than a poorly cared for _______________ (insert premium brand here). My folks have a 2003 Capri 19' and it ain't a bad boat.

OMC has been out of business for 15 years or so. Some of the old drive systems (see my signature :)) are WAY obsolete. Parts are getting harder to locate, and many marine mechanics don't want to touch 'em. Folks who own them seem to survive pretty well with them (I've done fine), but you need to go into them eyes wide open.

The 470 Mercs are notorious for problems.

Prices are falling already, and now is when buying is gettin' good. April/May in many areas, June/July are when things are back up to premium pricing.

Re: Thoughts on this boat

Starting right now is a good time, depending on your market of course. However, be ready to act as there are tons of sellers that if they get to the point of winterizing their boats (up north), then they usually wait until Spring to sell, so that defeats the purpose.

I don't personally care for either of the 2 options you've listed, as I think they're both a little too high. The tri-hull is a very small boat, and like has been said, "electric shift = move on to the next one", and the 2nd while a much better looking boat, is also overpriced I think because of the cost to maintain that Volvo. The ideal boat would be one in between with preferably a Mercruiser outdrive, v-hull like #2 and in that 2K price range.

The key to any "budget priced boat" or ANY used boat for that matter, is to inspect the condition of the deck, hull & transom. If you've spent any amount of time here, you'll find tons of stories that start with "I thought I was buying a good boat, until.....". Those "untils" are avoidable often times, you just need to look. If this is a "first" for you, take someone with you that knows what they're looking for. Good luck and I hope you find one that serves you and the family for many, many years. There's no better time to be had for a family, IMHO, than time spent on the water. Those memories are priceless.

Older bayliners are notorious for a combination of marginal quality, coupled with the fact that they were marketed as "entry level" boats, and thus the assumption is that they were purchased as toys and were not maintained well. Most of the late-model bayliners you see out there have serious rot issues, or are paired with Force outboards which I understand are hard to get parts for nowadays.

As for the Merc 470 motor or OMC, just do a search on the iBoats forums for these motors and you will quickly see the "haters" and their arguments. For the most part the arguments for OMC is that they are out of business and parts are getting hard to find. The arguments against the 470 is that there were some significant known problems with this motor which have solutions, but can be expensive...

Re: Thoughts on this boat

You guys recommending the Imperial know that it is a Volvo block, right?

So you're saying it's not a chebby and truly a Volvo? My '79's Volvo was a 350 chebby.....

If it were me, I would stay away from the tri's and look more at something similar to the Imperials style. Whether it's an I/O or OB is your choice.

So Volvo was buying chevy motors and putting their name on them at some point (I assume). Is there a list somewhere that details this type of information or do you just have to piece it together?

Volvo, mercruiser and OMC all used GM and Ford V8s with their drives and stopped using Ford V8s after 1995. All V6s are GM. The 3.0L engines are GM.

But the Imperial you are looking at is a Volvo engine, and makes it less desirable. Not because the engine is necessarily bad, but the drive itself can be a more expensive to maintain than a Merc Alpha, and then add in a unique engine and it's just best to look elsewhere. good. Volvo plus 3.0 good, Merc plus 3.0, better, Volvo plus Volvo 4 cylinder, not as much . . .

Re: Thoughts on this boat

I drove out and went to look at this one this afternoon:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/boa/3298360186.html
Boat was in pretty bad shape, floor was rotted. However, it had a big Merc on the back that ran pretty good. I did a compression test on it and numbers were 120 across all 6. Any idea what the motor is worth?

Beware of cheap fiberglass boats!

A coat of wax on the hull and a couple sheet's of 1/2" plywood thrown over rotten decking with new carpet... and to the untrained eye the boat will look mighty spiffy, but evil lurks below deck and in the transom!!!

If you're in the market for a used boat, find one you really like (motor and hull) and then restore it. This way you get a "new" boat for 3 or 4K$.

Remember! You get what you pay for!... and with a boat, you can get a lot less than what you paid for if you're not very careful.

Re: Thoughts on this boat

Motor itself is probably a $600-800 motor, possibly more. The boat isn't worth $1k. I'd offer $500 if I wanted the motor. I don't think I'd bother trying to bring back that tri hull

Definately not $1,500!

I did a quick look on Dallas CL and here are two I might consider looking at based on your current price range and what you said you might do with it:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/boa/3320633430.html -I'd wanna' figure out the OB and make sure it was solid before I buy it
http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/boa/3255861423.html - IF this boat is in good shape, then I might consider it. It's possibly an electric shift which would weigh to a heavy "nope" for many. Helm replacement would be pretty easy. But at this price, the OB and the hull would have to be as good as they look in pictures.

If you can bump your budget up to $2,500 or $3,500 you'll get some better options though.

I'm not big on the deck boats but the other one is kind of cool and it looks really clean. I may have to go give that one a look see. Also, I think I may need to learn how to search CL better.

Up your price a little bit and plan a trip to Ohio and you can have this. Worth much more than it's price tag, it's a steal and virtually a brand new boat.

I would talk to the fella about the outboard. I like the way he carries his water skis. :)

Re: Thoughts on this boat

That fiberglass deckboat looks like a neat one from the ad. I agree with the others about the last one you posted, OP. The motor, if in good running condition, with the controls is at most a $800 engine. You'd have to cut the hull up to take it to the dump, but you'd be left with the trailer. If it were me, and I was willing to do all that, $800 is all I'd pay for the package, figuring the trailer pays for the work involved in disposing of the hull.

You might want to take that deckboat out on a ride, however. YOu may be surprised on how it rides as those are planing hulls, not like pontoon boats. All that space comes in really, really handy and you'll find that out the more experience you get. I remember way back in the day when I was first looking for a boat thinking I didn't care for the deck boats or pontoons either. I've come to realize that they all "look the same" when you're behind the helm, so-to-speak. Keep at it, though, you'll find the one for you.

Re: Thoughts on this boat

Well the more I looked at the deck boat, the more i liked it but by the time i got home from church yesterday, it was gone. I found this one though and i think it's the same type as the other one that was linked. Ya it's a tri hull but I think it may be worth a look see. Plus is ten minutes from my house (I've quite looking at boats that are more than an hour away).
