It would be fun to do on an "occasion", especially if you can get the rounds cheap enough. I have a Chinese SKS w/the heavy barrel that takes 7.62x.39. It's super accurate. And I have an extended clip shall we say. I bought the ammo at $2 for a box of 20. At times I've loaded it up and pulled the trigger as fast as I could. I had large clumps of grass flying high in the air. It was a riot.... But, it didn't cost much to do it.....

Ps. The gun was un-fired and still in grease. It was never "issued"......

WIMUSKY, is your SKS a threaded barrel version? I know they were mass producing them some years ago but with pressed in barrels and stamped receivers. And their accuracy was not very good either. If I could come across 20 round for $2 a box, I would buy a ton of them. But that isn't the going prices that I've seen.

Limited, I do have the setup to mill out 80% lowers. And I am also looking at 80% .308 versions as well AR10's). Basically you CAN build most any type firearm you want. But you can't sell them or even give them away once built, and you have to do the work yourself at your home. But there is no paperwork and completely legal as well. :thumb:

thumper, I have to agree with you that full auto is fun. That is if someone else is providing the ammo. I don't have a third-class FFL so I don't have any full auto anything. The cost is prohibiting and of course that is why they make the cost so high. It makes the average person not get one.

jkust, If you've never owned a nice rifle, an AR15 is really a good choice for one. Very nice and can add so many optional accessories that it is "THE" rifle to own. But also look at a nice 22 semi-auto as well. Ruger 10/22's are a blast and very accurate! JMHO!

Not sure. I know the heavy barreled ones had extra metal at the breech and they shot well,. That's what I have. The ones w/o the extra metal didn't shoot worth a hill of beans..... I bought 1/2 a case of rounds years ago. I still have most of the boxes. So I have plenty rounds....... Even was shipped with the bayonet. They take them off now due to regulations. Got and oiling/cleaning kit. Gun strap.

It was supposed to have been issued to the Chinese Army. Never was. Not sure why. Maybe they went with a different firearm...... Never researched it.... My bro has a Russian SKS that came with a blade type bayonet.....

All this talk makes me want to go out and get an AR. Not a gun guy, only have one shotgun that was given to me, but there is a shooting range close to our lake house I'd like to get involved in with the kids. How did you get those 16's home from Vietnam? My dad served in Vietnam as well in 69 having got shot 6 times with AK's but he wasn't able to bring much home with him. Only reason he's alive actually is because the AK doesn't do damage like the 16.

First, I did not serve in Nam, but as a Commissioned officer, I was able to bring some toys home and I purchased these from a retired supply Sgt. I don't know where he got them, the Sgt and I served together in a few different places, I am also a FFL holder with the correct classification to own fully automatic firearms, I don't know about not doing as much damage, that darn AK that I got shot with did a lot of damage, I was WIA in Feb of 1991. I have been able to pick up all kinds of neat little toys over the years from guys I knew in the service. The 5.56mm is a nasty little round, depending on which version you are shooting. I am always looking for older military rifles, I worked with so many of them while I was still in the service, I would like to have to good examples in my collection. I ran into a guy at one of the gun shops yesterday, that has a M-60, now those are a blast! But as gm280 said, they get darn expensive to shoot!

Again, the reason I want to pick up and less expensive AR is to play with it without risk of loosing to much money if I wreck something.

I know no FFL holder will deal with them. But as for private sales, I'm not sure that's true.

I know a couple of FFL that will, but it is expensive and it can create its own set of problems, I actually sell a few suppressors every year based on specifications that a friend and I came up with, he owns a machine shop, in fact it was the shop that my Dad worked at in Washington. The lowers on the AR are what has the serial number so they are suppose to go through a FFL, but I do know a couple of guys that sell them to basically anyone that has the money. I know I can build an AR if wanted, but looking at parts, this complete one is cheap enough to not worry about buying all of the parts.

I hear yea MTBoat. If you do mill your own lower receiver from an 80% unit (which by the way are very reasonable these days), you can either put your own serial number on it or nothing. There is no law saying that they have to be serial numbered. But I think you also know that as well. But I do agree, if the total gun is cheap enough, go for it. JMHO!

I stand corrected. What I should have said was local gun shops here will not deal with them. In fact I had 2 different owners tell me they were not comfortable having non serial numbered "ghost" guns in their shops.

Well ended up picking up an AR today, as my wife said, Merry Christmas to you, of course she got a brand new 1 carat diamond for her wedding ring!, I purchased a DPMS by Panther arms, nice fit and finish and has the dust cover and forward assist that the S&W didn't have, seems like a decent gun to play with, also picked up two extra 30 round mags and 10 boxes of ammo, total cost was $611.00, so not to bad for a play toy, that if it dies, I am not out that much, my wife said, she never figured I would want to play Rambo again!

Nice choice. I think they make a good weapon. Also a plus it has forward assist. I know allot of manufacturers don't include one and I'm sure it's because they think theirs is superior to the original Stoner design, but the forward assist is a feature I want on all my AR rifles.

I have a friend with a DPMS mini-sass. It is a great gun. That is a good price for that package.

I like it, have not fired it yet, trying to figure out what type of sights I want to put on it, thinking old school hand rail and front post, a little retro like my first 16's I shot in basic, I spent 14 hours online yesterday, reading all about different things, that are not mainstream, some nutty stuff out there for the Rambo want to be's, but I did find a neat little milling machine that is designed to finish up 80% lowers so you can have a ghost gun, and I found an article about it in the most unlikely place an online computer magazine!

When I was telling my wife about it last evening, she just rolled her eyes and said, winter is way to long around here, you always end up getting in trouble!

My Colt is a full size with the A2 upper. I wanted one that was similar to the M16 I caried. I've added a scope mount with a drop down picatiny with double mounts for accesories. I also added a bipod on the front with a partial rail. I have mine set up for long distance shooting. There is an overwhelming amount of info out there on accessorizing these weapons. Building one to your own personal style and tastes is easy, even though it can get a little expensive if you're not careful. My Admiral says she's glad I have hobbies, i.e. boats, Jeeps, Motorcyles, and firearms. She just wishes they weren't so pricey.

Boy they sure did not change much between this AR I just bought and the 16's I have from the Vietnam era, if you wanted to get into a nefarious business, it would not be all that hard to covert to an illegal gun.

Just an extra pin and little parts in the back of the reciever. My friend converts them (legally with his FFL/SOT). They are otherwise the same.

Yep, a talanted person could just about build the extra components needed in his garage with a hacksaw, file and a drill press!!!😱😱😱

I was thinking an AR might be nice. After youngest got out of school yesterday we packed up the car and headed 40 miles to the city that held a large sporting goods chain store. Unfortunately we had to make a few stops before getting to the store I wanted to visit. After the 3rd stop (stop 1 a video store, stop 2 supper, stop 3 a jewelry store) my wallet said, "Time to go home." Never did make it to the sporting goods store! :grumpy: But ... happy wife, happy life ... ;)
