Okay, If this is the place to rant, I'm still getting error messages when I try to reply, after waiting for what seems like an eternity (like dial up?), then I hit restore, wait again (like dial up) before it's posted! Then, the forum just drops out randomly at times, goes offline constantly for maintenance I guess? Like a candle in the wind,,, and, I still can't change my avatar. This is going on 3 weeks now!

In the various vBulletin forums and info on the web, I keep seeing the term "vBulletin 5 Connect" and well as "vBulletin 5" . . . I am wondering if these are 2 different products . . . or one and the same . . .? What specifically is iBoats using ????

There was a lot of stink on the web about "vBulletin 5" about 2 years ago when it was first released. One would think/hope that in almost 2 years the dust would have settled :noidea:

[START-VENTING] There are other sites running vB5 . . we are by no means the first . . . so I am still wondering what really happened with the iBoats upgrade ???

Also, I see other sites running the older versions of vBulletin with seemingly few, if any, security issues :noidea:

Anyway, those are my questions of the day . . . [/END-VENTING]

A lot of other forums are running older versions of VB, just because you run a certain software package, does not mean you are prudent in keeping updated to the most current versions with all of the patches and fixes in it, I know a lot of forum operators that are still running much older versions, but they are not running systems that attract much attention and hackers don't bother with them because of that fact. Now you take a website like iboats with hundreds of thousands of users, attached to a eCommerce website, that attracts a lot of attention and is a ripe target for those who are trying to steal information. Most of the time when these updates are released, they contain updates that the average user will never notice as all of the security updates are behind the scenes and are not apparent to the end users.

Another thing to note, how these forums run also depends a lot on the server they are configured on, including the .php and mysql versions, what plugins you have installed and thousands of other things that are unique to each installation. There is no "one shoe fits all" in the server and internet world, every installation I have ever done has required me to tweek things to my specific set up. I have trashed some of my systems so bad, that I lost the database and had to just start over, in this case with iboats that would have been catastrophic!

Mik... The problem with your rants is that they seem to assume that no one else is seeing what you are seeing. We all are! Mods, owners, Admin etc. This is why I opened this thread. Frustration here is fine, but everyone is seeing what you are. The priority is to stabilize the forums.

Apparently vBulletin had not rolled this version out with a forum as large as ours. iboats and vBulletin are working together to fix this. iboats has bought additional hardware three times as part of this, once before, and twice after. iboats focus now is to implement the hardware to stabilize the forum, and then continue to work with vBulletin to straighten out the bugs. What you describe is more than likely due to previously insufficient hardware to handle the new software with our volume.

Thanks for the reply QC, I appreciate the response, and realize more now that we're all in the "same boat" so to speak. It's just that I get frustrated with all the extra steps, and the time it takes to get through a reply. Basically I see improvements along the way, and actually find better speed on some pages with a lot of surfing here lately. Keep up the Good Work!

I've found the quick fix for posting is to just press the F5 key after hitting 'post reply'...

FWIW, The problems don't seem all that bad to me, however, the lack of traffic tells me others are thinking otherwise...

Hey FR,

How you doing ??? :) . . . and how is the fleet this year?

I'll have to try that F5 thing . . . I have been re-launching the thread that I am posting to in order to check to see that my reply posted, rather than waiting for the error message (which I think is really a time-out condition). If the F5 key does the trick it will be much more convenient than having 2 tabs open on the same thread.

I am running a Mac, so I'm not sure if F5 works the same as a Windows OS (I guess we'll see) on my keyboard, the F5 key also dims the keyboard backlight.

Here goes . . .

EDIT:

OMG  It sort of works, except it does not look like it worked, but if you hit refresh, the post is there.

I asked toneeees the other day about the rank on the mods and admin and they said, they didn't know but were looking into figuring it out, but was not the priority right now.
