so the new budget is $1000-$2000?

what about just picking up a 150 for dad's boat?

That was discussed as well, but were hoping to move to a more trailerable fuel efficient boat. The Whaler is a fantastic boat but the runs to fishing spots are often lengthy and end up being hundred dollar trips.

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

So the hit list includes:

-New, old boat

-Tight college student sized budget of $1Kish, plus what dad kicks in

-Not using the (free, on hand) Whaler as it's too expensive to run and too hard to tow

-Looking for something relatively easy to trailer and easy on the fuel bill

-Use is near shore for fly fishing/diving

-Already has a 90 hp OB on hand, not currently running but likely could be made to

-Must be glass

That about right NEStriper?

Sorry smoke, I got booted out on that last requirement;)

Happy hunting!:)

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

that 22' whaler is on my mind; I think I'd find a way to make it work out.

If you want size, seaworthy and fuel efficient look at lighter boats such as proline, carolina skiff, bay runner, palm beach, skimmer. They can run a 90 where a heavier or deeper V boat won't.

Have you received an estimate of getting the 90 running and added to the budget? Not hard to spend $700 on repairs suddenly. I assume you have the controls.

Although irrelevant at this point, for other's reference, if I had a shoe-string budget I'd take a chance on a tin boat being in better shape than a glass boat with a bilge, all visible things being equal. I just don't agree with the assumption that all old glass boats are rotted, because I know it's not so (excluding sofa-boat bow riders which I wouldn't consider in the first place). IOW I prefer glass but would still recomment tin in the right circumstances; I don't see the wisdom in excluding one or the other out right, even though your dad (boat partner and finacier) does.

I gotta wonder what percentage of glass boat in the $1k or less price range aren't going to be rotted? How about one with a running motor for $1k or less? Smoke got a great one but that's a real rarity.

There are boats out there for under a $1000.00 My brother and I got ours for about that at the same time. You just may have to drive farther than you want. And be ready to put some work into fixing them up. Times are hard though you might just luck out and get a good deal. Things I would check right off the bat are the transom and floor of the boat make sure there not soft. Check the lights and electrical that can be a real mess if that's boogered up. I would also check all the eye bolts in the glass make sure they haven't been ripped out and poorly fixed. Good luck to you!

It's not worth it to get a survey, but look out for soft spots, flex in the transom... tilt the motor all the way up and shake the hell out of it, one ounce of flex = deal breaker. In general any soft spots in the deck = deal breaker. I'd be looking for a freebie and invest 2000 in fixing it up, but that's just me and im insane and like fiberglass work ;)

fixed it

really not all THAT rare unless you mean the free part

I bought my 26' Carver for $500 (with a trailer and on the water for $1500) and my 28' Wellcraft for $543 (with a trailer and on the water for under $4000) And of course the CC which is currently in the negative range but I don't own a trailer for it yet.

In my experience, the percentage of solid old cheap fiberglass hulls is about 25%.... for ten I look at 2-3 are great and the rest are junk.... of course, I don't go look at XXXliner's or anything pictured setting under a tree so that helps my numbers.

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

Zopperman hit the nail on the head. How many used outboard boats, mostly glass, do you see for sale on craigslist or elsewhere W/O motors hanging on the transom? Blown up, sold motor, upgradeing boats, etc are lame excuses for a bad transom alot of the time. It's harder to detect w/o the engine hanging on it so you can jounce on it. I'm very wary of any outboard boat for sale w/o the engine because i have looked at alot of them and smelled something fishy every time. Sellers get a little excited or put off if you even ask them about the transom sometimes, as if they're anger is going to convince you to just buy the boat. I was going to post this earlyer but did'nt want to stir the REEVITS pot anymore!:D

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

looks like a heavy hull (and why are there vents in the side?). As I said, you need a single sided hull, like a Carolina Skiff J series

That may be worth $1k if the trailer was included. Without? No way. Looks like a decent hull though.

That's the feedback I was looking for. Again, thank you. I agree with the Carolina skiff recommendation, I've been looking for one.

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

Since it sounds like you are open for a project, have you considered just building your own hull to put the 90 horse on? A plywood Stitch and Glue hull is strong, light weight and durable (once you encase it in fiberglass). And best of all, when you are done you will literally know everything about your boat.
For about your $1000 budget you could build a 17-19ft skiff.
For example: http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=FS17 this one by Bateau. $80 for the plans, ~$250 for exterior grade plywood & $1000 for the resin & fiberglass. But you could always by the resin in smaller quantities as you need it instead of all at once.

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

It's certainly an option. Do you have an estimate on the build time? I would essentially have 6 weeks to complete it, as having it for this upcoming season is important.

Also, another freebie close by. I like the hull shape, but dont know the condition of the floor oor transom. http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/boa/2732047451.html

Re: The "help me with craigslist boats" thread

If you have 6 weeks to prep a boat for the water than you basicaly need a "water ready" boat. Going to school and trying to deal with stringers/deck/transom ain't going to happen.

No title = huge problem
