Ronald Wilson Reagan. They called him crazy, they called him a war monger, they called him senile but he gave us this!(amongst much else)

No whining Democrat, mediocre middle of the roader or weak kneed conservative, today or then, would have ever dreamed of and supported the technological prowess of the American people.

Eat your hearts out PW and rolmops et al. The whining stops at your doorsteps.

I'll try not to eat too much of my heart out...

The Reagan years were hard on people who didn't make a bunch of money, and the only brilliant thing he did was figure out that all he had to do was out spend the Soviet Union on defense and they would fold due to lack of money. Otherwise, I'm not seeing much.

Since you want to talk technology and say that Reagan was responsible, then on that same vein Clinton would have been responsible for the Dot Com boom, which brought a lot more money into our economy than "trickel Down Economics" (which only works for people who already have money).

Nice try though...d:)

Reagan did an outstanding job as Governor of California and President of The United States. He was quite a man.

I would say ending the cold war was a little more important than a few bucks in peoples pockets, including mine.
And much more important than the Dot com boom.

Regan had the guts to try something different. Bush Sr, Clinton did very little. GWB tried some different things to and the media spin made him look bad.

Totally inaccurate analogy JasonJ. Clinton had absolutely nothing to do with the dotcoms, either on the upside or when they collapsed like a house of cards. Reagan had absolutely everything to do with anti missle defense. It was undertaken at his direction and he took plenty of heat for it.

As a matter of fact, it was Reagans anti missle defense proposal that finally made the Ruskies aware that they could not keep up with US technology. It was Reagan who refused to drop the anti missle project during the SALT? nuclear disarmament conference with Mikhail Gorbachav at Reykjavik Iceland. You better go back and relive/reread your history my boy.

As for the economy under Reagan, you better go back and check your history again. I don't know how old you are but after Reagan forced the country into recession to stop the rampant Carter inflationary spiral, this country underwent one of the longest and strongest and broadest peacetime economic expansions in US history.
And it never collapsed like the house of cards that was the dot com program.

Now those are facts regardless of how you personally might have faired.

Mr. Reagan believed that Americans could take care of themselves without government interference in their lives. Too much government is too expensive on every American to support the very few. His philosophy of the American Way and American freedom closest resembled that of the founding fathers. He believed that people should be able to control their own lives and families independent of government such as the socialist European countries have.

Reagan went to church on Sundays, so liberals will always make up reasons to hate him.

Shortly after leaving office, in an interview Reagan said his biggest regret as President was to follow the advice of the Secret Service after the attempt to assassinate him. The SS advised Reagan to stop attending church on Sundays because he was vulnerable to assassination during that time.

Reagan wasn’t just a great president; he was a great man of deep moral convictions that used those convictions and his faith that God really does bless the USA as a basis to effect one of the greatest presidencies of our time.

Re: The greatest President in our time!

I know this will disappoint you, Boomie, but I did think some of the policies Reagan implemented were good for the country at the time. Even the trickle down economics. The economic situation he faced was far different than the current one, and when venture capitalists could make 15% on their money by putting it in a CD with no risk, You'd have to have quite a business plan to get them to invest that money in a risk enterprise that might create some jobs.

What Reagan did at the time was just exactly what the country needed to encourage investment.

The Missle defense system is not one of those things. It is a collossal waste of money, a defense industry boondoggle, with the goal of providing a false sense of security against a threat that no longer exists.

I mean if you read the article, they had to delay the test because of fog, fergawdsakes. Any enemy we face that develops the technology to threaten us with missles will develop the technology to overcome any missle defense system we could develop.

Talking is better than shouting, and shouting is better than shooting.

If we ever are to be totally secure, we are going to get there thru diplomacy and shared interests and values, and not a missle defense system.

I don't particularly care if we have one, as long as we don't spend too much money on it, and we never really fall for the illusion that it might work.

President Rayguns was a fair actor and as long as somebody handed him the little cards that told him what to say, he did fine.
He presided over a nation where 18 % mortgages were the norm .The mental hospitals were emptied out into the streets and the sick were given prozac,or treated in prison.During his tenure homeless people in the streets became a common sight.
I do give him credit for realizing his own short comings and hiring very professional staff to make up for it.
His achievement was outspending the USSR on defense, but it cost us all very dearly,to the point that when the first Gulf war started, the elder Bush had to go around the world begging for money to finance that war, because the USA was broke!
I must say though ,that his wife was a very good president.

Re: The greatest President in our time!

Come on lets not elevate President Reagan to Sainthood just yet. I’m coming from the perspective of someone that voted for him two times.

Lets have a look at his record shall we?

In 1983, President Reagan initiated a strategic opening to Iraq, then in the third year of a war of attrition with neighboring Iran. Although Iraq had started the war with an attack in 1980,the war started to go Iran’s way by 1982.

The Reagan administration was beginning to think that Iraq might lose the war, so guess who popped upon the scene? Ya Bunkie there’s good old Rumy to the rescue.

Reagan chose Rumsfeld as his emissary to Hussein in December of 1983, and in March of 1984, Iraq begun to use chemical weapons against Iran. On November 1983, the first sustained use of poison gas since a 1925 treaty banning the use of chemical weapons.

Rumy never mentioned this blatant violation of international law to Sadamm, but in all fairness he did mention it to Iraq’s foreign minister “Tariq Aziz” to most people that would seem to be dereliction of duty, by not raising the issue with the leader, and instigator, of the war.

Reagan offered Hussein financial credits that eventually made Iraq the third-largest recipient of US assistance. President Reagan normalized diplomatic relations, and began providing Iraq with intelligence for the battlefield.

So for not much to be to annoyed about, with the exception of that little chemical blip, on the way to sainthood right? After all who was it that said the enemy of my enemy is my friend?

On August 25, 1988 - five days after the Iran-Iraq War ended - Iraq attacked 48 Kurdish villages more than 100 miles from Iran. As it turned out, the Reagan administration agreed that Iraq had gassed the Kurds, but strongly opposed sanctions, or even cutting off financial assistance.

Colin Powell, then the national security adviser, coordinated the Reagan administration's opposition.
There is also that little inconvenience called Iran contra, anybody else heard of it?

No doubt someday it will be 12 F'r, even if only in spirit.

Although this was not the purpose of my post, now that you whining liberals have brought it up, if had not been for Ronald Reagan, we would have spent much more, in the ensuing years, fending off the USSR than Reagan might have spent to bury them.

If you doubt that the Soviet Union would still not be a superpower contender today, had it not been for RWR, then you live in the same whining fantasy land that Ted Kennnedy, Howard Dean and Nancey Pelosi live in.

I also never contended that the anti-missle defense was perfect or complete. I really doubt that Slick Willy or John, the Vietnam Vet, Kerry (what an abysmal fool he was) would have continued the quest and gotten as close as we have. You liberals are so blinded by hatred for conservatives that you will bite off your nose to spite your face.

The only other serious threat we face as a nation today ie rogue nuclear ICBM's, is the threat from within from all of you whining, sniveling, guilt ridden liberals who think that everyone should pay for everyone elses necessities and that think you should be able to 'negotiate' with the Devil(s).

Boomyal, this whining, sniveling, spineless, liberal, no good, useless, abysmal fool supporting, whining fantasy land inhabitant, would love to know exactly which foreign wars you served this nation in and how many purple hearts you earned.I will not ask for your congressional medal of honor, because undoubtedly you have at least two of those.Just please, enlighten us all and give us your Government Issue history.

Please forgive this guilt ridden liberal, who surely is blinded by hatred for conservatives, for perhaps missing some parts of your tirade. It must be my liberal rage against anything republican.
