Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

a will this be enough or should i be cuttin up some more Lone Star leftovers?

B2 - Are you duplicating the bracing like the newer big ones have? I think they have a brace at each rib and about 6" wide max. If I read right, you are planning on each brace spanning a pair of ribs, roughly a foot between ribs. You could get 12 rib braces per side, 24 total with narrower braces. That's if I envisioned your idea correctly.

Good cheap motor stand. The "transom" is a balance point, should work with almost any size motor as long as you can wrestle it into place.

yeah, you're correctly imagining it. and yeah, i'm hoping to steal Starcraft's idea here (i'll let them keep the one about stiffening hull through pour-in expandofoam....). do the factory braces continue forward into the area where the hard chine gives way to softer curve of bow, or do they quit where the side panel does (roughly the junction between hard and soft chine)? if i need to do it all the way forward, i may have to order more aluminum (running low on Lone Star.....)

thanx GA. i was expecting to have to spend hours poring through old threads for pic like that. so should i just go with a small tab for each individual rib, rather than doing em in pairs?

I'm also mulling the options for adding that additional bracing.

EZ's shows a solid piece stopping at the console with tabs secured everywhere but the rib ends: post 111.

Actually, re-looking at Dozer's SS the braces are tied to the chine, not the ribs. The same with EZ's braces, except he has long braces. I think the extra braces were added because some of the larger models occasionally suffered from crack in the chine. And thinking about it, we have a few restos with exactly that problem.

I think either way would do the job. Riveting to the chine is the work.

Nice out board stand Bruce. Chin braces on the Naked Lady and Miss MyMoney go under the end of the rib and up an inch above chin. I think the easiest way to add then to a boat that did not have them would be to make them about 6" wide with a notch cut in them so they will sit down over the rib and rivet to the rib flange. If I explained it right.

Glen, i think i follow you. but wouldn't that mean you're riveting all the way through the hull, since the flat edge of that flange is through-riveted (to coin a term)(?)?

GA, i just looked at that pic again and see what you're saying. but it ain't gonna be practical to do it this way since i'd have to drill out a buttload of rivets, plus i've already gluvit'ed the hull and don't want to open up a bunch of potential leaks. i'd rather deal with a slightly weaker brace than ideal....this hull has survived the last 49 years without cracking even with no braces at all.

really appreciate y'all's input here. this is an area i hadn't even though about til after the boat was coming back together and know nothing about. but i do want to add some bracing here, given the duty i have in mind for this boat. i think my only options are going to be fastening it to the ribs, or to the floorboards once they're in place (braces will be covered by nautolex and by side panels.)

B2 - If you had the same kind of riveting tools/methods the factory used, it would be feasible. I'm not real sure us back-yarders should try it. Onesies/twosies are one thing, but those are a lot of holes to re-rivet. I'm with you on going to an alternative. Besides, it gives you something to think about as you float on the SOC, drinkin' beer waiting for that marlin or two. It's almost time. :D

oh dang, that's right.....i KNEW i had somewhere i needed to go next weekend but forgot where:D

for some reason, i'm having tr0ouble focusing on work....keep seeing flying dodos across my screen. i check the San Carlos forum at least 2x daily to see if the warm water and pelagic fish are there yet. closest thus far is one report of tuna 18 miles south, but that's a bit far for the portabote....wish i had the Holiner ready.

since you skeptics believe notrhing without pix, proof that the Rude lives

note the green "mark of the bottom feeder".....when i rebuilt the motor, i replaced the block cuz it was cheaper than o/s pistons. block came in bare metal; i had green engine paint lying around; case closed.

this is about all the work i got done on the Starcraft this week: cutting the teak block for the swim step base.

Also proof that the motor stand works!

I thought the green block meant the Rude is powered by bat guano. As green as you can get. :)

In another week the tuna will be closer. Go get that elusive billfish. :fish2:

I like the green paint... makes it unique. If it's ever stolen, it's hard to mistake it now... specially since there's a pic now online!

Hi barato, I found the easiest way to add re-inforcement at this point is to bridge the top of all the ribs with a stiffener that will be sandwiched between the floor and the ribs. See post #10 in my thread @ http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...tarcraft-holiday-reno-hull-repair-517895.html - Grandad

Grandad--thanks! that is exactly the info i was looking for, and i suspect i'll be doing a very similar approach to yours. i read through most of your resto thread and really love your work; sevl ideas i'll be stealing.

GA, wish i could run it on bird guano. there are several islands near where i fish that are literally white with boobie poop. of course, i imagine that would give the opposite effect from running on biodiesel: instead of people tailgating you to enjoy the french fry aroma, you could keep em away from your chosen fishing spot by just firing up the outboard.....

into the final stretch for trip prep this week so may not be much work on the Holiner. i did a couple of minor mod.s to the portabote but posted those in the PB forum.

I think you're trying to keep your hands and mind busy so Friday comes faster. :)

I had no idea we had a PB forum.

I had no idea we had a PB forum.

It's pretty difficult to spot with only 14 threads

do you think I'd get in trouble for bumping B2's 2011 thread? zero replies...so sad :grumpy:
