oops.....if the trim is to hide the booboos, what do you use to hide the booboos in the trim?

and it’s screwed all the way through and into inside corner braces

I’m keeping the front face of console removable in case I ever need to get in there
P1010260.jpg
[/IMG]

which results in these nice spears when I have it removed

but when the whole thing is bolted together, it makes the console not only pretty securely fastened down, but durn near impossible to tip over (i had to take it back off so i could tip the console for further work)

bottom line is console is strong and stable enough for dancing on top of, in case i ever have a bit too mcuh tequila and am feeling overexuberant

On to the Chronicles of Epoxy...

This pic shows how well the glass cloth wets out and forms to corners with the thinned resin
P1010229.jpg
[/IMG]

top of console post epoxy...came out kinda purty, I think
P1010247.jpg
[/IMG]

the dilemma: vac out all the alum shavings, or just glass em into place on principle?
P1010239.jpg
[/IMG]

another lesson in how NOT to do it: Why, when you put old grocery bags under your gaps to catch drips, you should be sure the bag isn’t touching your work as the epoxy dries

one of the side panels, with oak edging installed and epoxied

the panel which will go under the semi-vertical portion of splashwell

and onto which I’ll fasten the fuel system components

so am I a heretic/infidel/apostate for introducing this much glass into my tinnie?

I AM getting a window into the world of the itchy-boat resto set....spent much of last eve sanding down the epoxy booboos. Interior will get a few last coats, then I sand and varnish exterior. Plan for console and all large panels is to use the HVLP gun....the kitchen cabinets we sprayed 15 years ago look better than any of the brushed on varnish work I’ve done since then.

This will be part of the base for the swim step. I need to cut a serious bevel in this small hunk of teak, so first step was to fasten it to larger hunk so I could hang onto it as I pass it through the saw without putting fingers in jeopardy. I have great respect/fear for this saw...it took off the end of a friend’s finger years ago.

finally, a bit of pride in bottom feederism. i take 3 Forschner filet knives on MX trips; part of a bulk fleebay purchase so no sheaths. i had been carrying em in a Plano box but wanted to pare down the gear. a little thinking and voila! we present the Bottom Feeder 3-Knife Sheath:

no doubt that you're walking a fine line...consider yourself lucky that you used aluminum angle instead of fillets for the inside-corners :hat:

In all seriousness, really nice work!!!

OK - We have SOTY and it's time for a new honorific. BFOTY. You put the rest of us to shame, B. :thumb: Bottom Feeder 3-Knife Sheath, indeed. I see room for improvement, a finger and thumb still empty. :eagerness:

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

i actually did try to fit a 4th knife in there but the handles wouldn't fit. dull filet knives are one of my pet peeves, so i take a batch of em pre-sharpened.

not much work on the ol Holiday this weekend....mostly prep for Mexico. got the camper shell painted in fresh white (did i mention that bare aluminum in Mexican summer sun gets H_O_T?), a bunch of maint done on truck, 40+ trolling lures rigged up, loading the lever drag reels with fresh 40# mono, setting up the portabote to test fit some more mod.s, prepping outboards to come out of hibernation, etc. About all i got done on the boats was to move the Lone Star to the new parking area and grind a little more on the fiberglass in holiday console.

When are you heading south, B? And did you find the mono leader?

You're still working on the Holiner, so that's good. :)

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

hopefully in about 2 weeks....5/24 or so.

i actually found a coil of 100# fluorocarbon in the closet so i used that up. but i may have to go to mono in future, that fluoro is a mite pricey for bottom feeders. i have a spool of 200#, but Peter Pakula (Pakula lures) recommends sticking with 100# even tho you'll lose some fish because you'll get more strikes. can't entirely argue, that 200# looks like clothesline.

i'll get a bit done on the boat and have more pix manana.

Clamps are like hammers, can't have enough of them. How did the outboard do?

Looks good man! Nice job on a creative stand for the outboard.... for a brief moment I thought "I wonder how that would hold up with a 90 hp hung off of it..."... then thought "not well". But for that 8hp? It's a perfect fix!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

actually, if you upscaled the trash can to a 55 gallon plastic drum, you could do a bigger motor this way.....i set it up so the weight of motor was resting on the skeg, on a wood block at bottom of trash can....the "transom" is just to clamp it to for pull starting.

motor started up fine and i got it tuned up a little. i rebuilt it a few years ago andlove the little sucker. i much prefer doing the "resurrecting dormant motor after months/years" part in the driveway to doing it floating across the bahia.

about all i got done on the Holiner last eve was to measure for the chine braces. i want to bring them up high enough along sides of hull that rivets are well above waterline, so it looks like they'll have to be about 12" to allow for a couple of inches bent to rivet to ribs. i only have enough of the .080" alum for eight braces if i want em wide enough to tie into 2 ribs, four per side. will this be enough or should i be cuttin up some more Lone Star leftovers?
