Swearing and cussing for no reason?

First, I admit I am not a saint. When I hurt myself I'm the first one to let loose with a few choice words but what is with this thing lately of people throwing in a cuss word or two in every sentence? Especially around small kids?

Had to go over to the coop today and there were two guys talking and every fourth was "F" this or that and "SOB" the other thing. There were three kids, none over 8 or 9 standing there and these two guys had no clue that their language was offensive until their father said something and then they looked indignant at being told about it.

I don't get it...

Look at all the "reality" shows where the f-bomb is being dropped non-stop. Seems like every other word is being bleeped out. It's sadly becoming a normal way of speaking...... Or so they want you to think........

It's an interesting phenomena I have witnessed in many places. It seems to relate to age groups. 20s and 30s seem to drop the F bomb all the time as if it were salt and pepper. It's like pants below the waist/butt for some. I work with a lot of them and it is simply within the vernacular. There are a few women in my office that drop the F bomb like it's nothing. That said, look at the freedom in sitcoms today...they may not use "the word" but everything else is there from insinuation to outright talking about it--whatever "it" is. I think language is like smoking or farting. If I am offended, simply mention it and move on.

I broke myself of the cussing thing about 20 years ago.

I'll admit, it took some serious work. It's still there, but I catch myself.

But, today, I agree, it's everywhere.

I have actually had people comment on how I can talk without cussing. Imagine that?

I was fortunate, I had the background to overcome it. I just swore because I thought it was necessary-WRONG.

It's a sign of the times and our failing parental and educational systems.

We're becoming a more vulgar society, one slow step at a time, and don't even realize it.

You know....I also see this bleeping becoming commonplace. Rather than saying something else, the characters just let fly and bleep it. I can remember when TV wouldn't show a couple in bed.

The "bleeping" will stop shortly.

It's upbringing or rather lack of upbringing. Ivory soap tastes terrible.

It's vitally important to explain to kids that just because "it's on TV" doesn't mean it's true OR acceptable behavior. Children need to be told that networks rely on ad dollars to stay in business. Ad dollars chase ratings... or higher audience rates. Controversy and "shock" pull higher ratings due to people's natural propensity to watch that fire, train wreck or fender bender. They just can't help it. (Bless their hearts.) Even the news is more entertainment and positioning today... sprinkled with the old adage... "If it bleeds, it leads", 24/7. Add to that network diversification and a wider variety of programs available to a finite audience. The result is that the more bizarre, irreverent, vulgar, fake beyond belief, and goofy a show is, drive the ratings upward.

It's the same with YouTube and click throughs as well.

So I guess what I'm ranting about can be summed up thusly:

Parenting. It's a verb. ;)

I have to admit I have been known to be bad about it at times. now days as I work in an office I watch my lang much closer. still slip now and again

to the above I would disagree. My dad had no problem bustin my butt (to the point of breaking bones) and had a strict no cuss policy in our house. just, as I aged and I guess heard it more often in high school, then steel factory, than military it just stuck.

I always looked at it as someone who had to use words that were considered dirty or coarse were people who lacked creativity or education (or both). I mean, stop and think of all the other ways you can say something without being coarse? Be creative. Both my wife and I have stopped people at the next table in a restaurant, or in a public place, and reminded them that our daughter was within ear shot of them and to please use creativity in your adjectives, not profanity. Usually after a blank stare, they get it and move on.

I wasn't too sure with 2 military guys after my wife talked to them. I didn't know if they were going to start to cry because they might have offended a young girl, or if they were going to take a swing at my wife for offending them! They did regain their composure, apologize, and move on in their conversation without every other word being the f-bomb.

I am outspoken and swear when alone........ I will in a heartbeat ask people to tone it down around children regardless of who the kids parents are. Since I have worked within Law Enforcement and my wife who is the Domestic Violence advocate for all of the police departments within the County....... we often joke about dealing with the "unwashed"....... while we can't offer people immediate improved hygiene we can and do ask them to keep the language clean around children.

We all understand stressful situations that trigger the foul language however, everyday use is NOT acceptable.

Remember when Hill Street Blues always ended with the Captain and his wife in bed!

Re: Swearing and cussing for no reason?

It's part of the American/English language, get used to it.

Has anyone else noticed it in movie sequels where it wasn't used in previous movies? In the last James Bond (Skyfall) movie "M" drops the F-bomb and in the last Star Trek movie the "S" word is used a couple of times along with A**.

If you'll hide a mic and recorder on those supposedly innocent little kids you'll probably find out the cuss as bad or worse than the co-op boys when adults aren't around to reprimand them.

If you want to be a prude, that's fine... but don't try to curtail someone elses right to free expression.

When I sit in the stands at football games is when I hear it a lot. The problem is that the guy behind me is doing it and there is a 5 year old kid with his father in front of me! Not sure why they can't just tone it down when they are in that situation.

If they insist on doing it in public around children then their free expression is subject to my freedom to correct them.

Swear words just a show low brain power
Gotta' agree - there are too many words in the English Lexicon. If you're stuck consistently reverting to cheap ones, ya' might wanna' start reading some more.

There are a few words that I understand have their place in the language, and I'm okay with them in context. There are a couple that really just don't have a place in language.

I don't plan on getting used to it anytime soon.

Re: Swearing and cussing for no reason?

I see lots of folks that can't have any conversation unless they cuss constantly. It has a lot to do with their educational level and knowledge of actual words. Too easy to cuss out "F" and "MF" and "S" words when you can't make your point without using such. I'm not saying that I have never use any cuss words, but I could probably count the number of times on one hand. I just don't use such language. Just listen to some songs (for lack of a better word) and see how prevalent it is used. I used to work in an electronic repair shop and it was the worst. I found as I moved to a Computer Programming and Engineering office/lab, is was not as prevalent. I guess some folks think it is cool to use such language, it shows other they are acceptable or something!

I don't think Frank Furillo and Joyce Davenport married. If they did, it was very late in the show's run. Hill Street Blues broke a lot of TV tabus and was one of the best TV cops ever. Definitely not for children.

And I never had a say in the choice of mouth wash. :blue:

Re: Swearing and cussing for no reason?

my grandpap dropped the f bomb every other word, it was just how he talked. if I repeated it I got to find out what the back of his hand tasted like. he was a hard man, up before daybreak feeding farm animals, hard worker all his life. he died in 1983 when I was 13. I cant imagine someone trying to tell him how to talk, I'm sure they would have awakened wondering where he went and how did they're jaw get broken. I sure do miss that man, most people couldn't stand him, said he was a mean sob, but I would follow him around and he would work me like a mule, guess I was a gluten for punishment, but he would allways take me with him fishing or wherever, I sat in the front seat and he allways kept a horse or pony for me to ride. I earned it. loved that man, he sure did cuss though.

If your kids text and use Facebook/social media, you would blush at the language. The media and entertain culture is constantly exposing kids to the language and sassy attitudes.
