Well, mine does smell like gear oil. Good, clean gear oil. That was really the only real take away - the gear oil in my lower unit smells good. Good as in it's good - nothing wrong with it.

There is a high sulfur content in gear oil.----Might be the reason for the smell.

Update..
I couldn't notice any difference between the Amazon $14 impeller, the genuine Suzuki $30 boats.net impeller, and the one I took out of the water pump. I installed the Amazon one and will be keeping the genuine Suzuki one for a later time, and keep the original as a backup.

Happily Trim works good.
Mixed some 50:1 just in case oil injection wasn't working.
Got it running, but it surges up and down.

How much money would be a reasonable amount to put into this motor?
It looks like it has been well taken care of, but it's surging and I gave it my best attempt and then decided to take it to a shop.
So, assuming it has low hours, how much is it worth to keep it going?

Stopped by to drop off a motor part one time.-----While there the fellow asked me about an 85 HP Mercury.-----Shop had quoted $1500CA to get it running.----I helped diagnose that choke was not working----Had motor running after 5 minutes.-----Coached the fellow on installing a new impeller $50,0----And new fuel pump kit.----Fixing the wiring.-----You have to be carefull visiting some shops ./ dealers.

I guess what I'm thinking is, if it has good compression and the lower end is solid, if I put money in this motor, it'll probably out live me. And considering the cost of new.....
