Stringers

I have a 14' Babcock tri-hull that has set for over 20 years maybe and not been touched or moved. The floor rotted and so did the stringers. I spent a couple of days cleaning it up to get it ready to clean. yeah that bad. SO now I am to the point where I can get materials to redo the floor and stringers.
My question is can I use 2 by's coated with exterior polyurethane instead of the fiber glassing. The purpose for the stringers are for structure and stability and weight distribution. As long as the strings are fastened or glued in place then it should work, right?

You really need to do some homework on boat restoraton. The first link in my signature below will give you some basics. The Stickeys at the top of the forum will help you too! Read, Read and then Read some more. What you are suggesting will definetly not work.

You will need a large amount of contact area to hold the stringer to the hull. That is why tabbing is used rather than just simply gluing the edge to the hull. They will easily separate from the hull with just a small contact area.

Like I said, you need to search the forum, Read and study about boat restoration. The first link in my signature has Drawings and info on how to do it. The stresses put on the hull of a boat when under full power and hitting a wave and or a wake is much more than mere Liquiid nails could sustain. The Fiberglass is what gives the structure its strength, Not the wood.

I see your point. It makes since in my head but then when I talk about it, it just falls apart with flaws. I just printed off your little novel on how to do stringers. If you do it right the first time it will last longer.

If you don't do it right, your boat will be unsafe and could lead to catastrophic failures, i.e. sinking and loss of life. When you're in 50 - 100 ft of water you don't want the boat to fall apart on you. It has to be done right, there are no other options.

The problem with lumber now .. it freakin WET.

Sure you could pick some 2x whatever 12 years ago and it would be Dry.. not any more man..

Take a Moisture meter to them sticks and find your actually going to entrap moisture and whatever in your dimentional sticks to feed Etheopia for a week !

Seriously..I have screwed into lumber that has water coming out of the screw points.
