merry Christmas everyone

boxing day here in Melbourne, chilling out after the big meal yesterday
time to get into boat
started ripping out motor, transmission and Z-drive
had to push boat back out garage , with motor coming over bow, plenty of dust to clean up

Like a jigsaw puzzle when you start stripping the guts out of the boat
At some point it’s all got go back together

Cleaned up the Daytona crash gearbox today
Seems to nice to paint again
I wonder how the clear coating would stand up to the harshness of marine salt, humidity and moisture or whether should just paint it the aluminium epoxy colour ?

I checked out Matrix by PPG which was recommended to me, however there clear is 40% solids
I'm in Australia and have used in past engine enamel from KBS coatings DiamondFinish - Clear Coat - Application Instructions - Automotive Clear Coat (kbs-coatings.com)
The guys behind this company were involved with POR so I'm informed but the KBS range of coatings is next generation which has 60% solids and you can flow it on with brush and looks like oven cooked 2 pack, however works on bases of humidity and is one shot (no mixing 2 parts)
2-3 coats should be enough
KBS made in USA and Australia
cant be that bad?
Happy New year all you boaters

Stripped back the mercruiser Bellhousing to reveal the raw casting
What a shocker
Realise now why they apply decent coat of black paint, as casting was rough finish
I suppose rough the Brett we to hold the paint

sanded it up ....knocked into shape
Looks half decent now

scott, we supply into metal casting industry, and I would be a shame to send that casting out the door to some lucky customer

Been thinking about location of trim pumps, as the 280 K-planes purchased showed up last week, freight form USA taking forever at present due to covid, shipping schedules.
The best location would be bolt them to inside rear transom, close to the actuators, however would be difficult to get in there is any future problems

Few weeks ago travelled to antique race boat meet, and when moving around the pits noticed a lot of the boats had windows cut out of rear deck, with access panels there, generally made from tinted lexon, so you can get access to the inside transom, as well as see what's going on from outside the boat.
Thought this seemed a good idea
Thinking I could router a step in the window cut out and then drop the lexon panel into the recess to make a smoother look

Not sure how else you could do this without relocating the trim pumps forward and running longer hoses between pumps and actuator fittings

Applied epoxy undercoat to underneath of hatch yesterday
Use roller and brush as weather wasn’t that good for spraying
Just to see how glass filled and get hang on putting down some paint
needs a little more fill, that epoxy paint is sure thick

Was up early and outside this morning at 06am ready to start fibreglassing
However had a reasonable dew on boat so had to towel the old girl off then hit it with sone acetone
Took a little longer to put down the laminate. As working the cloth into ridges was longer than expected
Used 600 grm CSM/612 grm biaxle cloth
It’s been 25 c all day to had time to harden up nicely

Was thinking need another layer over that section of boat as it will be high traffic area
So will lay 200 grm CSM/612 grm biaxle over gunwale tomorrow morning
That will give the gunwale approx. 40oz when finished
it’s been 25c today so glass has had chance to harden up

26c today a little warm for fibreglassing outside
Sanded the laminate on the gunwale
Came up good
So all set for some filleting/ skim coat to blend profile in

decided to extend the passenger seat pedestal
This way when skiing and I turn the seat around 180 degrees facing backwards I can have the seat back not quite touching the dash which gives passenger more leg room

fine tuning the seating arrangements
