Steering cable length, can it be cut down?

Is it possible to have the steering cable shortened? The one i have is about 3' to long. It has the nut to mount to the motor and the quick connect at the helm. The inner cable is threaded like a long flexible screw. I have been told that it is not possible, but somehow they are cut and ends are added when purchased new.

I wouldn't even try. If your shortened cable is in any way compromised, then that is your life on the line if the steering lets go... New steering cables are not that expensive. Get the length you need and get out on the water...

not a great idea to cut it, would you rather crash and fly out of the boat when the cable/motor lets loose to one direction or spend a few dollars on a new cable

+1

and there's nothing wrong with a little bit of extra cable. Just route the extra length out of the way and hold it there with zip ties. it's not uncommon to see lots of extra cable be looped and zip tied.

The more loops you have in a steering cable, the better chances for hard steering. Bit the bullet and get the correct length.
