The black stuff seems to follow the waterline was it ever slipped? I would also plan on doing a deck and transom. Its still easily worth it at 3k

Hmm that's not good. He said he bottom painted it. And pulled the boat out of his slip in November. Could it just be bottom paint?

go check it out. crawl under the splashwell with a flashlight & have a look in the bilge for electrolysis. Slips with shore power can do nasty things to an improperly grounded aluminum hull.

my guess would be that the black stuff is Goop Coat-it. but from overall looks of package, i doubt you'll find a "Bluefin's Nightmare" hull.

on the paint, you don't need to flip it....perfectly possible to do on trailer, just by sacking out first one bunk and tipping to that side, then repeat for other side. the only areas you might have trouble getting nice paint on will be along keel, where it's not visible cept when on trailer and where it will get ground off the first time you beach it.

It was slipped in freshwater as recently as November. He seems very straightforward, told me it's only bottom painted. He is ping to take more pictures of under the splash well and bilge. He has an offer for $2100 for the motor but doesn't want to part it out. If I like what I see, I will ask his bottom line.

I'd offer him $2700 for the whole thing just to see if he bites, my favorite negotiating tactic is to take the full amount with me. If its $3000 I put $2700 in one pocket and the other $300 in another that way if he bites at $2700 then great if not then you have the extra. I'd pay $2800 for that engine as it sits.

Some additional pictures...

Anyone see anything troubling? I'm very appreciative of the advice thus far. My fianc? is worried about the aesthetics, so is making me ask how hard it would be to paint this boat? Can it be flipped at this size? How does one go about it?

Edit ( and I may just take it to a new thread after this... He used pressure treated wood on the floor he replaced three years ago... Corrosion likely?)

Thanks again!

tha first picture does look like spray pattern.... I bet it could be that rubber coating.....
LOOK at it closely........if it is pitted, you will see the pattern

Yep, the bottom paint may be paint of some kind, but hopefully if it is actual bottom paint, it's aluminum boat bottom paint.

If it was kept in a slip, and it seems to have been, he's likely to KNOW what type of paint it is, and if it's bottom paint, he hopefully knows if it was aluminum safe bottom paint. Or at least have the info for whoever applied it, and their #. It looks to have been done on the trailer, based on the black paint drips on the trailer.

Good luck

It has definitely been re-decked. Hopefully the existing deck was removed, and the new not laid right over the old...............

Still, if the motor checks out, it could be a $3K rig.

I'm with Sig, I'd offer 2700 or maybe 2500, I think he'd go for that, also I'd buy it on the assumption it would need a total restore, if worse comes to worse the motor if it's in any kind of shape and the trailer are worth that.

Re: Starcraft on C-list/ebay!

Thats exactly how I base my offers on the price of the motor and trailer only. If I can't break even on selling just the motor and trailer it usually isn't worth it.

Even my 16 SS with no motor. I bought a donor with a motor and trailer for $300 the hull and trailer on my 16SS for $550.00 So two trailers 1 motor and two hulls for $850 Easily break even.

I wouldn't worry about anything except the transom, that's the bugger to do, so check for rot. The pressure treated floor isn't great, its not the voodoo witch craft some make it out to be either. You should lift a corner some time to see if its corroding the stringers if not then leave it, but in most normal conditions it takes many years just to start to give you problems, that's because of the copper used in the treatment. In some environments it can cause corrosion quickly, so its hard to judge. It is a saltwater rig so that's a big negative to me on the motor. On a salt water motor, that can be totally shot already if it wasn't taken care of properly. I'm not sure how you would flush the motor if it is left in the slip, so to me I would figure the motor is worth scrap. But that's because I have experience with them and have burned by deals just like this one thinking the same as I would fresh water.

The one thing you do want to do is find out what kind of paint he used on the hull. On these alum boats you can use a bunch of paints so long as they are alum friendly. And even plain old cheap rustolum works pretty good, and its cheap, but most of the time they don't play well with each other, so when deciding what paint to use your deciding on what paint your going to use in the future as well. So when you touch it up your using the same type of paint.

Your question though is loaded, as it would be fine to use just the way it is for some, others would need to tinker a bunch with it, others want it perfect, so.....

Re: Starcraft on C-list/ebay!

Thanks guys.

This owner has had it for 9 years. He said he's never had it in salt water. His slip is a freshwater slip. He said he will run the motor in his driveway, which is different than under load, but still something I want to see. I've rebuilt a transom before, but would still need help doing so again. I've also redone a few aluminum boats, as well, just never this big (i've done, 12, 14, and 16 footers).

He said the bilge is easily accessible, so he will take more pics tonight and send. I would rip that floor out and put in regular ply that is covered in marine varnish. I like the look of nautolex, so ideally I would put that on if I redid the boat. The boat's outside does need some attention, and I'd love to repaint. I've used zinc chromate, self etching, and Petit EasyPozy before, so I am familiar with the paints. Even Rustoleum was used, and it worked ok.

If the motor runs well, I think I should buy it. He said he wants close to the asking, I just have to see what "close" means.
