i found a 89 Starcraft 180 mariner center console with 86 70hp Evinrude on a trailer, used in saltwater but in Great Condition. $2,900. Seller patched a pin hole in the hull 15 years ago and has kept on the trailer since then. I plan to flood the hull to check for leaks and inspect from the outside. Any other suggestions? What do you think of the price?

Welcome to iboats whaler!!:)

Some photos would sure help.

At that price you should have a water ready rig. Meaning, good running OB, no soft spots in the deck and a completely solid transom (among other things).

You spose the seller will allow you to flood the hull to check for leaks? I don't think I'd go for that.

"a pin hole" does not sound good. these rarely happen in ones.

for that much $, i'd be very picky. you'll find very few of us have paid that much for an 18' hull. read back a few pages in this thread to see the usual issues with these boats and the stuff most of us look at. at a minimum, i'd expect very sound transom and floors and a good running motor with decent water pumpage for that $.

pin hole = electrolysis in salt water

Q:was the engine flushed with freshwater after each use?

thanks for the feedback. the funny part to this is that my father was the original owner of the boat from 89' to 94' and sold it to the current owner. We had no contact with the guy who lives 50 miles from me and i just happened to stumble upon the guys clist ad. The current owner used it as a second boat and i believe him when he tells me that he used it couple of times a year, it shows. i went to look the other night. The current owner is a charter captain and is meticulous. I have to say that a good part of my interest has to do with the sentimental value the boat offers to me as it brings me back to my teen days. I am meeting him tomorrow and he agrees to let me flood the hull and perform compression on the engine and whatever else, he is not pressing me for the sale. I will be very thorough. Wish me luck. I will send pics either way.

That sure is a nice set up there!

If you have any suspicion of soft spots in the deck or in the transom, any ant all, forget it! If the deck and transom is solid and everything is looking and running good I think it's a fair price (though I'd still be negotiating).
