Jim I wouldnt be so quick to repower . These boats are quite light compared to fiberglass and that 115 should do a pretty good job of making her scooot right along. I have been told my 80HP Merc should get my 16'er up around 40-45MPH you only have 5 more feet of boat and 35 more HP.:D

OK Back at mine slowly but I am doing a little here and there. Finally got the old motor off. Now I can tackle the transom wood..... well I thought I could till I got to the part after removing the 10,000 screws and what not my god I think it would have helped if I were a contortionist. :D Anyway here is where I am, I need some help here guy's how the heck do i get the wood out without removing the whole gunwale or can i just bend it then hopefully bend it back...... I know I shouldn't even ask that question, But seriously can anyone help me out here what direction do I need to go here. check out pics 19 and up you will see that the gunwale hangs over the transom wood quite a bit. HELP! http://picasaweb.google.com/jbcrumbley/1976Starcraft21OB#5367291436452575042

Hey Jim, I like the looks of that boat. I just removed my transom and like yours appears to be the top pieces of the transom are separate from the transom. I drilled into mine with a large bit and then pryed them out. This allowed me to remove the transom without bending up or cutting the gunnels. I do have to decide if I am going to put a single piece transom in or do it the way it was. If I do a complete single piece then I will probably need to at least bend/cut one of the gunnels. One thing that makes it a little easier on mine is that I also removed the entire splashwell....don't ask. When I got to the rest of the transom it didn't want to budge so I used a chain saw and it was out in no time. Now I just need to practice my tracing skills for the new one. I will be posting pics this evening if that will help. LOL. By the way, how is the foot?

everything I've read on this procedure basically calls for bending em free so you can pull out that wood insert..

Few guys have used a cherry picker..rent one for a day and yank her like a bad tooth:eek:

Hey Jim yep pretty much bend the gunwale metal up towards the bow and you can slide the wood out of the transom ( it will still be a pain in the Arse and yes a cherry picker might come in handy ) but thats how its donw then after the new woods in you just bend it back it is mostly covered by the transom caps anyways . Good to see you back at it by the way I had forgotten you hd a resto thread going .

Re: Starcraft 1976-Mrnr 21 0/b restoration/Rebuild

OK this was a lot easier than I thought. Just had to remove a few screws down each side of the outer rub rail channel instead of all of them just so the rub rail could be pulled away safely without bending it. then do the same with the inner rub rail then just remove a few rivets from the top piece of the gunwale and whaaaaaaalaaaaaa ! it is easily lifted up out of the way to get to the last 4 screws that hold the two very top separate pieces of the transom wood, then the bigger main piece will slide and or come right out very easy. Man I am sure glad I took a break yesterday and didn't just try to force it out and bending the gunwale upward making the job harder.;) http://picasaweb.google.com/jbcrumbley/1976Starcraft21OB#5367291679738893314

Hey Jim do you think you could go over to the Starcraft forum and add your little trick to the tips and tricks thread I just started . I asked JB to make it a sticky for us and would like for your little trick to be the first one in there :D. I would be happy to put up the pictures for the thread if you can do the words :D.

Hey Rick how do you know I am not and old salt. :D One thing I've learned over the years of taking things apart, like when I was a wee kid (Moms toaster, transistor radios, and just about anything that was broken around the house) was that if you have to force it to get it apart then look a little deeper and there will be the answer to the easier way to remove something. Basically kinda like a puzzle just reverse the process of putting it together. Most of the time. Did you look at the pics rick?

Re: Starcraft 1976-Mrnr 21 0/b restoration/Rebuild

OK the transom wood is out of my boat. Took a bit of a break during the hottest part of the day just couldn't take it out there. Found my Come Along
or Cable Puller that was hidden in the garage for last 10 yrs or so looked around the yard till I found a tree with a branch that looked big enough for the job, and if I could maneuver the transom end of the boat to it and get it back out. Then I went to work. It took a little bit of persuasion after I put some upward tension on the transom. Then on the inside of the boat I had to use a screw driver and a claw hammer to spread some aluminum pieces away from the wood a bit. After doing that I then used the hammer on one side right near the edge of the wood and along the bottom just beating it into submission till I saw it slip upward a tad. Then added more tension and beat some more till it starting sliding up and didn't stop till the one side slid out.:D Finally now i just need to start all the fun stuff, you know cleaning all the aluminum and sanding and resealing all rivets and seams and filling any holes I don't see any use for. More to come as I get to it.:p few more pics in the album if you want to look.

Jim looks like you had a fun afternoon . I have been running service calls and still have at least one to do .

I thought I would let you know your link to your pics in your signature is broken ( takes you to the sign in page for picsaweb ) . I went back to your earlier post that I got you to do a tutorial on :D. I looked at your new pics and earlier today I put the other pics into a post right after your tutorial in the tips and tricks section :D.
