spinning out of control

85 3.7 liter mercruiser, goes into gear fine but when i drop the throttle the engine sounds like it spins out of gear. if i back out and go slow it seems to be fine.i had the prop checked out and i even put a spare prop on and it did the same thing. could my shift rod not be engaged far enough? i had the linkage ajusted and the mech. said that it was as far as he could adjust it.

with the boat out of the water and engine OFF, put the drive into FWD gear. go to prop and rotate counterclockwise. the prop should lock and not turn at all

if it does there is an issue with the engine coupler or drive internals

If the spare prop did the same thing, you may have a spun coupler. The rubber holding the splined shaft has come loose from splined hub.
When this happen, can you smell burned rubber?
