Just saw on our local news that our local John Ancrum SPCA is building a new facility. They said it will hopefully enable them to adopt out 6,000 to 7,000 more animals per year, reducing their euthanization rate by 1/3. This means they're killing somewhere around 20,000 animals per year...

doesnt matter, killing critters that your not going to eat is simply wrong.
however given the birth rates of unwanted domestic animals sooner or later you have to do it.
yes I am a member of several rescue orginizations, yes I have euthanized more than I care to disscuss.
but when we do it its peaceful and I can stroke them and comfort them while the light goes out.
try it some time.

You know what's worse than hearing it on the news?

Having to werk next door to the local humane society incinerator for 30years... The smell of burning cats/dogs was nauseating, and I lost my breakfast more than once.
It is indeed,sad --

but what is even sadder than that is how some would come in... Starving, half-dead, ate-up with mange, worms, fleas n ticks. Shivvering, sad-eyed critters cast-asside by heartless humans. Often, the alternatives to a painless euthinasia is unimaginable suffering.
And that only after being given one last chance for a happy new home.
Support them, man. They are doing a thankless job, and have saved millions of little lives even so.

and as Bob used to say after every show, "Have your pet spayed or nuetered".

I agree...but interestingly, and probably worse than not being eaten...many of those animals ARE being eaten. Quite a few of them end up being rendered and made into PET FOOD. I read an article a little while ago about several cheap brands of dog and cat food that were tested by a lab to contain pentobarbital, the chemical used to euthanize cats and dogs, which apparently survives the rendering process.

After just having to put my dog down, and then reading about that, I decided to donate enough cash to a local no kill basset hound shelter so that they could house 4 more dogs.

I understand the necessity of some of it (have had to put some horses down), but the numbers just shocked me. This is not that big of a city. Most of the big ones have more people than are in this entire state. I shudder to think what they're doing. Anyway, such a shame and very sad...

It would be even sadder if all of those un-fixed, unwanted animals where left to breed.
